| Subject: going to the vet.... Mon Feb 27, 2012 2:55 pm | |
| Alright so I do have a vet for maggie. They have been expensive for vaccinations. So I have been doing shots by myself and going to clinics or spca for rabies and heartworm, I went to get the other shots at this animal rescue, because there is only certain days the feed store sells animal vaccinations. Well, I should have known walking into this room. The vet tech was terrified of maggie. I would be too if this big dog comes in there that looks like a wolf. Anywho maggie would not have any of these people touch her. I got 2 shots done and she almost bite the vet so we couldn't get heart worm test. Maggie loves her actual vet, they lowered their prices to match shelters and rescues. I am going after we go on a hike so maybe she will be very calm and collect, malamute self. |

| She could probably sense that the tech was uneasy and that made her feel uneasy. Poor girl. I'm sure that she'll be better in a familiar environment with people that love when she comes in to their hospital |

| As much as it seems like overkill I always have both Adobo & Biko muzzled when at the vet. They've never harmed anyone and I doubt they ever would, but for the techs and vets peace of mind I keep their mouth shut. Everyone relaxes and the dogs don't pick up on the fear vibes. |

| I hate to brag, but I've never seen a dog so calm like Dakota is at the vet. He doesn't wimper or get upset when a thermometer is stuck up his butt or he gets shots. I hope this awesome behavior continues. He's got his third round of shots coming up this week, one of those being rabies i think. Maybe it's the weiners that the vet gives him |

| Cali has in her records at the vets office that says: MUZZLE!!!! so I bought her a nicer one then the vet has (they have a hannible version) and I bought a mesh one.
Dunno what happened, but it was during fecal test probe I was told. I don't blame her. |

| Honestly, if you wanna be a Vet Tech, I don't think you should be scared of any types of dogs, just my 2 cents.
Mine are great at the vet, they get super excited and our vets are great with them, and all the techs and receptionists love them |

| I find a lot of vets and vet techs intimidated by Chili - since he's so big and "wolfy" looking. I make sure to emphasize that *I* will hold him down or restrain him, and that he knows multiple commands to comply with where they want him.
This is because the first time we went to get his hips checked (they're ok!), the vet and vet tech grabbed both his front and back legs to flip him over (80 lbs at the time and he would have fallen onto the floor hard) - and he got scared and growled at them. I was so annoyed at them - but I just said "you want him down and with his belly up? watch this. Chili - down. Chili - gimme belly. There you go - let me know next time you need him in position".
I've trained him to do stuff to make vet visits easier, including the "stand" command when I just want him standing so they can examine him. Working on those commands with the small white one, but she's so easy to move around and flip over. |

| The vet we took our GSD too was terrified of GSDs, even muzzled, which made our GSD's fear aggression with strangers multiple many times over. It was so irritating. I just take Nunya to Petco to get his shots, that way I only have to pay for the shots and not an office visit. The vet there is so friendly and doesn't appear to be afraid of any of the dogs that come in. |

I agree! We have gone to three different practices since owning dogs and each one has vet techs that greet our dogs in happy, high voices. Of course this makes the crazy dogs wanna just love all over these happy people. Even the vet allows the dog to "warm up to" him or her before ever touching the dog. Sabaka will be seeing the other vet at his regular office on Friday. We've not seen her professionally yet, so hopefully she will be just as good! I so agree with Jennet, if you fear any creature you should think twice about being a vet or vet tech. |

The vet blog Len got me reading thanks to the Husky controversy, sent a blog out about how her GSD patients make her nervous. I was pretty shocked she openly admitted to it. |

| That is surprising. At least she's willing to admit it so people know and can choose to take their dogs elsewhere. |
