| I need some advice... My husky is 2 and was finishing weaning puppies when I adopted her, so she still had a lot of milk build up, therefore she had no fur on her undercarriage. Now that we have had her and her milk has dried up, should i expect her fur to grow back, or will that stay basically hairless from now on? When we first got her she was really underweight but had a good bit of fur on her neck and tail....(like in my picture) however now she seems to be putting on a good bit of weight, but it looks almost like she has been shaved her hair is so short and with being a new husky owner i just want to make sure im not doing anything wrong to make her lose all of her coat the way she has! I brush her once (sometimes more) daily with a slicker brush and she honestly gets a bath every other day it seems because she will pee on her blanket or bed and sleep on it. She won't pee anywhere else, just where she sleeps. I'm guessing this is because she was stuck in a crate her whole life for breeding purposes and has done this quite regularly....her skin doesn't seem to be dry or flakey from the baths, but could it cause her coat to fall out...?

| The frequent bath's could play a part in it, but I'm not 100% positive. If she were my dog, I wouldn't bath her that often or brush her that much. I brush my husky maybe once a week and have had him since December and haven't given him a bath yet (although his stinky butt needs one SOON). The hair on her belly may grow in, but then again it may not. I think it's something you're going to have to wait and see. My female Dalmatian is 7 years old and has a completely bald belly where my male Dalmatian has a furry belly.
Maybe ask you're vet if you can give her some sort of a vitamin supplement to help hair growth. I know fish oil is really good for them, so maybe try giving her one of those a day. Also, egg is REALLY good for their fur too, so maybe try giving her some of that. I'm not sure what kind of food you're feeding her, but that could also play a part in her coat as well.
For us, taking a multi prenatal supplement works great on helping our hair/nail grow and get healthy! It's full of Vitamin C, D, E, B6, B12, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folic Acid, Calcium, Iron, & Zinc. I'm not sure if dog's can have any of that or if they make some sort of a dog prenatal supplement, but it's worth looking into!

| Thanks so much for your reply! I didn't know egg was good for them, I will definitely start giving her some! We tried to stay away from people food with her, but the first week I had her she was eating literally everything off the counters, in the fridge and in the garbage. She was a nightmare lol but much much better now that we've established some rules for her. She's a very food motivated girl and will do anything for a treat lol. My two year old can even make her sit for a "cookie". I feed her blue wilderness...my other two dogs were eating this so i just added it to her diet. she was eating canned food when I got her and her teeth were terrible. However I am open to any suggestions and comments you may have about food. |

| They have A LOT of great threads on here about nutrition and what are the better brands to feed. I personally feed my dog's taste of wild lamb formula and my Husky raw (I've had great success with the raw and improvement in his coat). I'm not familiar with Blue wilderness, but it seems to look like a good food! I would continue feeding her that and do supplements.
As far as her bed goes, if she is still urinating on it, maybe it would be a good idea to remove it. If she pees in her crate without the bed, she will not want to lay in it and hopefully the urinating will stop. It's worth a shot! |

| I'll check the threads out I haven't put her in a crate yet because Im not sure how she will react to it. I was told that when she was found she was in a medium wire crate with a choke chain embedded in her neck, they tied her up in the crate for some reason. Her coat had a yellowish tent and she smelled like urine the first few days after she came home with us. When I have the bed and blanket in the wash she tends to find rugs to pee on and then lays by it. Im guessing laying her urine is something she thinks is normal and its been a challenge breaking her from it. I have a feeling crating her with no blanket may be the route we will eventually have to do, I just don't want her to freak out and think I am locking her in it. |

| That's so sad She will get use to the crate and won't think badly of you for it It will be her special spot and hopefully she will take to it. If she takes to it, leave the door open so she know's she can come in and out and isn't going back to her old life. Poor girl sounds like she has been through s lot. I'm sure with a little work she will be just fine. |

| Brushing your dog everyday is a GOOD thing. However, since she doesn't have alot of fur, I would hold off on it for a while. Huskies don't need to be bathed very often, even if they get into a mess. I would just get pet wipes, or even baby wipes, and wipe her down. bathing her that often may not seem to have an effect, but you can strip their oils quickly. Definitely add the egg, and give her fish oil. You can give her the human capsules. both of these will help build her coat back up. Also, what are you feeding her? Giving her high quality food will help with her coat and overall health Maybe a groomer that specializes in huskies can help give you advice as well. I know several people on here will be able to give you more advice, but I would start the egg and fish oil asap. Good luck. She is lucky to have you now! |

| Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the brushing so much. I usually only brush mine if they really need it or when they are blowing coat. Unless she seems to like being brushed, then it's probably a good way to help build a relationship. I second crate training with no pad in it at first. Let her out after meals, when you wake up in the morning, right before and after you have her out to play and socialize. Potty training will probably be a bit difficult since her past experiences though. Make sure you give her lots of praise and a treat for going pee outside. Maybe even take her out on a leash each time and make sure she goes and give her a treat.
As for the hair, Elara's mom looked terrible after having her puppies! lol. She lost most all of her coat, cause it's common for them to really blow coat when they have puppies. I was amazed when I saw her again several months later. She looked like a totally new dog! So I wouldn't worry too much about her hair growing back unless her skin looks bad. If her skin looks healthy, she should get her hair back after the next time she blows coat. _________________ -Sara |

| A girl I know got her female in similar situations. She was used to breed and spent most of her life in a crate. She has no problem with being in a crate now and will often go in there by herself. I would try using the crate. I'd also stop putting bedding in there at night if she's just going to pee on it. She may not do that if you crate her and put no bedding down. Brushing her will actually stimulate the hair follicles and promote growth, so don't worry about brushing her too much The constant baths may be drying out her coat and skin so I would try to stick with hosing her down if she does get nasty, try not to use soap so often. _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?!
