Taste of the Wild just came out with an awesome puppy formula! Definitely give it a try. You wont find it at any big store chains, if you go to their website they have a dealer locator, just type in your zip code and it'll show any distributers in your area.

I have done some work with Iams company, do not feed it, it is bad. We feed bbw and totw, and they are really good foods. Totw is a tad cheaper than blue buffalo if your looking for cost effective food. Dont let the price of good food scare you away from it. You feed half as much if not less, so a bag last twice as long. In the end, it comes out just about the same, and your pups will be healthier.

I agree with working away from Iams. I recommend along with others to upgrade to taste of the wild, which is what i fee here, or blue buffalo. Quality food makes for a better husky

When i've switched kibble to kibble initally I did it over a week. About 75/25 first 2 days, 50/50 for 3 days, then 25/75 for the next few days. After a week you should be able to feed 100% of the new food without much issue. I always liked to add some pumpkin (not the pie filling) just to keep the stool as firm as possible.

On average you'll most likely be advised to transition from one food to another over the course of about a week. Kristina follows a fairly typical transition. However I would add that every dog is different and some may require more or less time for transitioning from one food to another. Some sensitive dogs may take 2+ weeks to fully transition to a new food while other dogs with iron stomachs can be switched cold turkey with no trouble at all.

one question I have for pupies is, I have been looking at getting blue baffalo, but should I get large breed puppy or just the standard puppy blend. I would have thought large breed but I hear a lot of huskies being more of a mid size dog

Huskies are considered to be a medium sized breed, so you don't need to bother with the large breed formula.

I am also wondering how much people feed their puppies per day. I feed my 11 week old puppy Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy food 3x a day. For breakfast and dinner she gets 3/4-1cup depending on how active she is (more if she has exercised a lot), and 1/2 cup for lunch. She also gets a few treats during the day when I am teaching her tricks.
I hadn't heard of TOTW until now, I may switch her to that when she is done with her Blue bag & take her off the large breed food!

Another thing I was wondering was how long can you feed your dog "puppy food"? Are they puppies until they turn 1 year old?

My puppy is 12 weeks old and the breeder told me to feed Hayden 3/4 cup Royal Canin medium breed puppy food three times a day. I found this to be wasteful, because he wasn't eating it all and cut his food back to 3/4 cup twice daily (morning and evening). I've recently switched him over to a Raw diet, which he LOVES and I personally think is way healthier and better for him. I buy the Vital Essentials large raw frozen patties and he eat's one a day and I also throw in a 1/4 cup of his royal canin just so he's getting the extra fat puppies need. I'll be adjusting the amount's as he grow's and there should be a weight chart on the back of the bag's that provide you with the appropriate amount of food you should be feeding you're puppy.

I also like Victor - cheaper and it's still a very good dog food (in my opinion and others, like dog food advisor). All ingredients come from the US as well.

PostSubject: Re: Feeding Puppies   Feeding Puppies EmptyTue Feb 14, 2012 10:17 pm

hmm a little but it depends on the lines, my pups lines range from 8-10lbs at 7 weeks of age. Usually I say at this age they should be putting on about 1-2lbs a week so I would at least expect them to be in the 13-16lb range at this age, I'd expect them to have grown fully in height at around 9 months old and then start filling out until they are 3 years, when they will look how they are going to look for most of their life, bar the odd color changing huskies Wink

You could do worse than Iams, but you could do a lot better. TOTW and Orijen are really good foods, a few others have been mentioned.

In mention to Vicky's question, I will usually take pups off puppy food between 9-12 months depending on their level of activity and their personal development. It is diffirent for lots of pups, but most pet pups don't need it past 9 months as they are just getting small 1-3 hour walks daily and are not being worked. So it depends on the pup.

You've been given a lot of good advice and I can't really add much more.
