Agreed! I wouldn't leave him off leash for much longer or before you know it he'll make a run for it.

Luka is adorable!!! I love you

As relaxed as I look, I've always got an eye on him Smile When he starts wondering further away, I'll probably start leashing him!

LOL.......... hope your fleet of foot. I thought I could catch up to Adobo once, but she proved to me I'm about as fast as a snail compared to her.

Great looking pup you've got.

Well, about a week ago i was twice as fast as he is - now... not so much! he is getting stronger and faster every day - he doesn't wonder too far though so for the time being, I'm comfortable with having him off his leash when there aren't any cars for him to run in front of!

We just tried letting our little guy off the leash just today he's 4 months old. I keeping hearing and reading that Huskys are not an off leash dog. Our little guy did great... Judging by some of your comments...it probably won't last long?

there are a FEW that are always good off leash but for the most part NO huskies are NOT off leash dogs. in fact i think all dogs should be leashed just for safety reasons, has nothing to do with how good the recall is and what not you never know what car will come by or snake or crazy child or what ever else could happen.
yeah i let S&J off leash but thats after a few miles hiking up a mountain and not till were out of the woods and were with a group of other huskies that don't wonder. but we still chance a crazy little animal popping up and the dogs want to chase and if the snow-pack is bad or there is a cliff near by they get leashed right back up. i would hate to lose them over something i could have prevented.

oh and thats a great video

I used to let Embry off leash all the time when he was a puppy, before I knew they shouldn't be. I usually only did it when we went to the dog park, because he'd run straight to the gate to go in, around 6 months he decided that he could go wherever he wanted. We chased him around the perimeter of the 10 acre dog park for about an hour before we caught him.

The only time Luka is leashed is if he is walking to or from a park - I would hate for him to dart across the road and get hit by a car... Even during that video, we had to cross two roads along the trail - i just tell him to wait up and i leash him to cross the road - being off leash is nothing new to him - he knows he can chase whatever he wants and go wherever he wants - he also knows that "come here" means "come here"... I can call him back from any chase he is on and as long as I know his surroundings are safe I am happy for him to be off leash, after all, even though he hates letting those squirrels get away, he knows that there will be a billion more to chase along the way - I just love seeing him free and would hate to keep him on a leash at all times - its a risk I take but I believe its worth it.

My husband learned a lesson from my other husky. She was always on a leash and one day he ask why i never let her off. I told him she would run and never look back. Well a few years later we moved to FL and he started letting her out without a leash. I kept telling him not to do it and he was like she doing fine she stays with me blah blah blah. Well she finally ran and it took me and animal control 2 days to find her. Her coat was a mess and she very dehydrated she was such a sad sight.

Yeah we just let him off the leash at a nature trail by our house and if we got close to the road we'd get the leash back on him - or if we saw people we'd do the same. And if we'd hear a russle or something in the leaves or in the trees we'd try to grab his attention before something else did. And right now he only runs off in front of us a few yards than stops and looks back. If he goes to far to yell and call him back and has come back. So we'll use better judgement where and when to let him off... but as far as being next to a road - he's not going anywhere near it without a leash on.

That's my fear - I really dont want to loose him!

Anyone here microchiped their dog? I should probably do a quick search i'm sure i'd find something on this forum. We've thought about it but not sure if it's really worth it or if we want to for other reasons.

I had Blaze Microchip when he was Neuter he was 9 months old when we got him he is 16 months now.

He has gotte n out the front door a couple of times we had a hard time catching him (being we are alot older than most of you).

I take him to the nature park for walks all the time on Leash only.

My daughter takes her Aussie she can let him off leash and he comes back to her when she calls.

I like the video off luka off leash I wish I could trust Blaze.

I can't imagine seeing Luka in that state :/ I guess America is a bigger place - everything here is a lot smaller and closer together! I know one day he will get carried away and i'll have to go running after him, just hope he doesn't wonder too far! Started young with him so hopefully he will be alright!

i have mine microchipped but you need to make sure its registered so they can locate you, i have read that people will microchip but never connect it to a site that provides the person that found them with contact info.

Mine are chipped and even my two indoor cats are chipped! Better safe than sorry!

I actually met a good off lead husky at camp. lol. But he was 9 yrs old and acted even older. I swear I didn't see him go faster than a walk. Poor old guy was on a lot of medication and his health and lack of wanting to go faster than a walk were the only reasons why he was good off leash. He wasn't the quickest to respond to his owner's commands, but he was so slow it didn't really matter.

But yeah, enjoy it while you can! lol. Siku used to stay by my side when she was a puppy, but forget that now! She pulled out of her collar once and was GONE! Thankfully she stopped to sniff a pole and I threw treats under her nose and she came back to me for more treats. But she sure did not care that we were frantically calling her to come when she first split. You could tell she was like "freedom!!! At last!!!" That's why I really like that we have big fenced in dog parks around here. They can play and run around in them like they're almost free. lol.

I'm assuming there is a monthly/yearly subscription fee associated with such a service?

And it's like a GPS tracking type system? Or is it more animal control found my dog and they scan his chip and contact me saying they have my dog?

Over here they chip most pets along with their puppy vaccinations. They are connected to a site and if found, the chip is scanned and your contact details come up, its not a subscription and its not GPS. Luka is chipped, its quick and easy, probably feels like a firm pinch.

You pay to get the chip and then register it. Some of the companies let you keep a fancy profile page for your animal and you have to pay a yearly fee to keep it, but they will always keep the basic information you paid for in the beginning even if you don't keep the fancy profile. So you only need to pay and register for it once and your information stays on record.

I was one of those people who didn't know I needed to register the microchip! lol. I rescued my cats from a shelter and they were given chips and I didn't know I needed to register them until 2 years later! Thankfully they never got lost and now they are registered under my name. If they had gotten out before then, the shelter's info would have popped up and they probably would have been able to find my info in their old files.

that happened to us to with jack, i knew he was chipped so i figured the rescue info was on the chip, NOPE! a yr later when we did Sierras chip i found out there was NO info on the chip!!!! i fixed that right away! we use home again http://public.homeagain.com/ i think its like $18 a yr for each of them. i think its worth it. it would be great if it has GPS!
also make sure you have the chipped scanned to make sure its still in the body, they can work themselves out or to other locations on the body. we have the vet do it once a yr.
