Hello all,

My name is Kyle and my fiance and I have just put a deposit on a new husky puppy. We currently have a 6 year old Yellow Lab and thought this would be the best time for her to add another dog into the mix. She seriously is the best dog I have ever known. I know everyone says that about their dogs. We adopted her from the NEADS organization after she flunked out of their training program. Any tips you could give the two of us as to raising a husky from puppyhood would be wonderful and greatly appreciated!

Get a crate! lol It's a great training tool for potty training and it gives them a "quite place". Lots of toys and get a Kong, the ones you fill with food and treats, they are great for the crate training

Brooke's right about the crate! I brought Luka a 42" one and divided it until he was big enough that he needed the whole thing! My guy loves his crate - even if i had to sleep on the floor with him for the first few nights so that he got used to it :-) Buying a big crate and dividing saves you quite a bit of money as they are not cheap!

You'll have to be very firm with him at the start, the more consistent you are with him, the quicker he will pick things up!

Make him sit and wait for his food (you'll probably struggle with this the first 2 weeks). Take his bowl away during feeding for a second and then give it back to him - stick your hand in his bowl etc. For the first couple of months, I made sure I ate before and in front of Luka before i fed him - whether it was just a small yogurt or a meal! I worked up to sitting on the floor eating next to him while he would just watch - kinda helps with the alpha stuff initially.

If he is timid on his walks at first, just take it slow with him, I know it took my guy 3-4weeks before I could walk him without him wanting to go back home.

Prepare yourself to give belly rubs as and when requested.

They can be incredibly stubborn - never lose your temper with him - just remember, he is only a baby, you'll hate yourself afterwards.

My guy was very mouthy for a good month or so - nothing seemed to work apart from telling him no and putting him straight in his crate and leaving him for a minute or telling him no and leaving the room (closing the door).

I used to use his crate a lot for when he did something wrong, but I only started doing this after he was well accustomed to his crate and he knew it was his own little den.





Luka is coming up to 5 months - he is my first husky, my first dog, first puppy - I'm still learning every day and I'm far from being an expert at this. I just wrote using my experience with him in the past 3 months!
