Thank you so much, I'm so glad I joined this forum because as I was searching through last night I saw a photo posted of a dog with ZRD and her eye looks almost identical to Kaia's - so I googled it and all images that came up looked like what she has as it is also around her mouth. I am going to call the vet today and talk to him about testing her for this. In the mean time I purchased some nutrazinc supplement to see if that helps. Will keep everyone updated in case anyone ever runs into this problem with their dog and needs to find a solution!

Looks like ZRD, but there is another illness were the dog shows such signs when he has contact with sunlight, I don´t know the name of it right now but this could also be possible.

It's been awhile but I wanted to update on Kaia in case anyone else has had the same problems with their pup - so it's been 5 months since last posted and it has been a roller coaster - -the vet was convinced she had an auto immune disorder - so he blindly started treating her with prednisone (since december) I also started her on zinc supplements - her eye skin condition cleared up on the prenisone, however her body took a turn for the worst last month - the continued use of prednisone (without the doc monitoring her blood as I later found out he should have been every two weeks) her liver collapsed as well as her pancreas - she couldn't walk, jump, she could barely move.

she had gotten her lyme booster and had a reaction where she collapsed in the kitchen and vomited repeatedly - so off to the emergency room we went - her bloodwork came back with liver levels at 7600 (when they should be at 175) had a mild case of pancreatitis and was hospitalized for 4 days where I really thought we might loose her.

The EV took her off the prednisone - put her on liver medication and I started her on a high fiber low fat diet and 2 weeks later she was running, jumping - a brand new dog - her skin condition is of course back being off the prednisone - but I am managing it with animax until we get allergy test results back -

I am posting this because I feel like folks need to be informed about prednisone - I do believe if administered properly and montitored carefully it can be a useful drug taken short term, but it seems to be the go-to drug cure all for everything lately and the side effects can be lethal if you are not informed correctly. My vet had taken her blood in April and when I called to see what the levels were for comparison in May's ER visit - my vet stated they had bad numbers from her blood work in April and the liver levels were 0 - yet I had received no call back that she needed it retaken. (Needless to say I have now switched vets )

I know I have to find out what is causing her skin issues, but in the grand scheme of things - she is not itching at them, they don't bother her, they just look ugly - and compared to what the prednisone did to her I just wish I had been better informed on what precautions to take instead of relying on my vet to be doing the right thing - if your dog does have a disease treated by prednisone - make sure you get their blood taken routinely and stay on top of the vet for results and try to find something else so they are not on it long term -

I will keep posting as I know more about her skin condition - which looks like zrd, but zinc wasn't working, so I am hoping it is just allergies - and if it is auto immune - will find a way to manage it without steroids

SOB, talk about malpractice I would see if there was a way to make the previous vet pay for the emergency care. Nothing ticks me off more then the way some vets are so quick to put a dog on prednisone for skin conditions. Many of the symptoms you mentioned happened to the Malamute I had when on prednisone, kidney problems lingered for well over a year before I felt he was free of the effects of that stuff.

Just because the zinc isn't working I would not rule out ZRD without a skin biopsy. Scary crap steroids. Effective short term but so many side effects, I agree with Len. Glad the ER vet was able to pull her through!

I am so glad to hear she is doing better..

As for steriods for skin condition that is not the best thing.

I had a cat that had a skin condition was put on steriods well to make a long story short the condition did not clear up but she became diabetic and had to have insulin for a few months until her levels got back to normal. I changed vets when her skin did not clear up that is when she got test for diabeties and we took different method of treatment. It took her months for the condition to clear up but it finally did.

Glad she was able to be saved, if a vet ever wanted to put S&J on any meds the first thing I would do is hit the internet and see what its all about. Hope your vet is on top of everything and let us know about the skin

Glad she's ok! Chili was also put on prednisone for a skin condition and he couldn't cold his pee for more than a hour or two, was super grumpy, plus other side effects - it's a super powerful drug I would save for life-threatening emergencies. We finally figured out the skin allergy was linked to a natural shampoo we were using - hopefully the allergy test helps! Hasn't had a reaction since. Good luck!
