| Now that it SHOULD start cooling down a bit I would like to attempt to go jogging with Mya and Kody in the mornings. By a bit I mean low 80s vs high 90s. In the mornings it should be around the upper 70s until we hit November or December that it drops to the 50s. Anyways, I attempted it today and they stop EVERYWHERE TO SNIFF! I walked and let them sniff away for about 10min before we starting to jog, but it's like they drag me to a spot they MUST smell. I tried to keep jogging while saying "GO". They know "GO" when biking so I figured they would listen. They did, but not all of the time SNIFFING IS ANNOYING!!! LOL VERY ANNOYING WITH THEIR SNIFFING! |

| I've tried jogging with Dakota and he just doesn't get it so I've given up. He walks great and runs with the bike great, but he's a nightmare to jog with! Hope you have better luck, I have no advice as I can't jog with mine either! _________________ |

| I don't jog, so I guess that's not an issue for us (bad knees). Stormy is pretty good about not sniffing. Though when I was younger I tried to jog with me beagle.....not a good idea. Sniff..sniff..sniff..yelp..sniff...yelp...he was such a cool dog though. |

Runs backwards? How in the world! LOL! So he runs with his butt in the direction that you're jogging? Or he turns around and runs the other way? |

| He runs with his head facing me and his butt in the direction I'm jogging. Like I said, it doesn't work too well! _________________ |

| Storm loves to sniff...he's sniffed the same places over and over and still has to sniff. In the beginning, I let him since it was all new scents. But now when we're walking, I'll tug his leash and say 'Let's go' or 'Hike' so I keep him focused on a structured walk. But when hubby runs with them, he has no choice but to keep up and therefore no time to sniff or mark.
Maybe when you're walking, train them to stay focused on a structured walk and not a leisure walk to sniff and pee. As they get better, pick up your walking pace, or even up it to a walk/jogging pace (so a very slow jog) and if they want to stop to sniff, tug their leash and give their command to keep going. Hopefully, you'll be able to pick up your pace to a steady jog.

| Val, haha!!! I would love to see that!!! LOL!!!
Claudia, I've been trying to cut down their sniffing on their normal walks because seriously it will take me an extra 20min if I let them stop every time. I know that they're dogs and sniffing is what they do so I let them sniff a few times, but when I say GO it's GO even if I have to drag them. With the jogging it's just harder because if one of them lunges to the side and I'm jogging it's harder to yank them to keep going. Mya gets it much better than Kody though. She'll pretty much keep going unless it's something she's really interested in. Either way my "jog" is a fast walk for Kody (his legs are so long!) and a slow run for Mya.
It's so much more tiring to jog with them though. On a normal jog I can go for about 20min (on the ground...on the treadmill 35min), but with them it's like 5min and I'm totally outta breath! Must work on that! |

| I'm bad. I won't take the dogs on runs. Eddy always tries to guilt me in to it on Saturdays but I need a workout so I can't handle the stopping thing every 90 seconds. I'm a bad mom but he's better at controlling them so he can take them. |

| Koda gets exhausted after a 5 minute run and makes me drag him as he stops to smell things.. I'm hoping Rogue has more of a drive. |

| Ditto to what Claudia says.
I run with Bodhi almost every day. He would stop, sniff and mark at every tree, tall plant or bush if I let him.
So I let him mark at the start, the first quarter mile or so. Then I pull him away from the tree saying, "On."
i do have more trouble on single track trails, though, where he's got lots of temptation.

| I'm a runner. It's what I do. So for Jack and I, our daily jog is some of our high-quality time. He loves me for it. He was a handful at first, but I just recently finished perfecting our system. Get something that fits well around your waist. Loose enough to be comfy, but tight enough to not fall down when you stop. I use a black solid rubber bungee strap. Then I use another 31" bungee strap as a leash, connected to me and him. The little bit of give in the straps mean we don't jerk each other around without warning. Keeping the leash short means he can't gain momentum to pull, and he can't get to a full stop before the leash is pulled. Training is easy: every time we are about to pass an object I think he'll want to sniff, he gets an "On-by." Then when he slows down anyway, I simply let my arm fall onto the leash. It tugs his collar just enough to give him a hint. Early on he would try to stop anyway, but because the leash is attached to my waste it is impossible for him to pull me off my feet. And then when he realizes he can't stop and powers way ahead, he gets a "slow" and I drop my hand on the leash again. With consistency, he's learned what the commands mean, and he's learned that while running, he should just assume that we aren't going to stop. I still give him the commands just so we maintain some sort of interaction during the run, but he doesn't try to stop anymore. He's getting better at running by squirrels and other dogs, too. Also, when running on a sidewalk he's always on the side away from mailboxes and things. And when running in the road, I claim the left lane as my own and jog almost in the middle of the lane, moving over only when cars come. And lastly, don't be afraid to put your husky on a treadmill for an hour. I don't own a treadmill, but we tried it out at a friends house and Jack loved it. If I could afford it, I'd probably by one just for him. |

| Considering Nanuk is just a baby still, and not even all that spectacular on the leash I'm sure our time is a way off but when is a good age for him to start going jogging? I broke my foot in 3 places back in August and am slowly working my way back up to jogging condition so I figure maybe we can work up to it together if he'll be old enough for it anytime soon. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks! |

| They really shouldn't run for any sustained time until 9 months to a year. Short spurts of running are OK. Grass is good. And I wouldn't run on pavement much at all if I could help it. Can you run on the beach with Nanuk? That's a great surface.

| Well, like I said I'm still kinda gimpy and working myself back up into jogging condition so it won't be for any sustained amount of time for a while yet. As for the beach, we live close enough but I won't be going down there until it gets warmer because this time of year its super windy and super cold and I'm a wuss lol. Now, once I am back to jogging condition, would interval training (for myself) be an okay thing for him to do before 9 months? I'm not sure what is considered sustained amount of time so a guideline would be really helpful =). |

| Honestly with your foot healing I would be *very* careful running on soft surfaces. You're probably best off just playing with him in the yard or dog park until he's a bit older. I've had horrible foot and ankle problems (read lots of surgery), and the last thing you want to do is risk turning your ankle on soft ground while it's still healing. Not sure about the interval stuff, but I'm sure someone who knows a little more will chime in.

| The healing foot is another reason I won't be going down to the beach for a while, I'm still a bit nervous about reinjuring it. As for living on Whidbey/being Navy, no we're not. We're just regular ole civilians =). We know a fair amount of Navy/Marine folks though and before quitting to go to Nursing school full time I worked at the NEX for 5 years. |

| I wouldn't do any jogging with the pup until at least 8 months or older, preferably closer to 12 months to give his bones the best chance at growing properly. If you're really itching to start working him up as a jogging partner I wouldn't even start that initial introduction until at least 8 months and even then I'd keep it short and only on soft surfaces like grass, not concrete. Remember your pup will want to do more than just a little run so it will be up to you to be the wiser and stop before over doing it, regardless of how your crazy, enthusiastic puppy partner feels.
For now, stick to just walks with your pup. Of course unlimited free play and running is fine in the yard. _________________ |
