SO... we put kale under anesthesia today to take some xrays of his left shoulder and leg. My doctor (Dr Larsson) wanted to see him walk while he was dopey from the pre-meds and there is definitely a slight limp, more so from his elbow/shoulder. He walks with his paws outward with his elbows tucked into his body. The xrays didn't show anything abnormal in his joints or bones. He thinks that he may have injured some soft tissues in his shoulder area that have't had a chance to heal completely, so we're trying a Rimadyl trial (anti-inflammatory) for a couple weeks and are going to keep him quiet; if that doesn't help I'll need to go to a different Dr to get a CT scan of his left shoulder and elbow. The whole procedure was emotionally trying, to say the least.
After we induced him he wasn't breathing on his own and we had to continuously sigh him, which in itself was stressful. Finally started breathing on his own about 15 mins later. (THANK GOODNESS! He was about to give me a coronary!) Me and both Drs were in the xray room, next to the table where Kale was, discussing treatment options. When we were walking out I gently touched Kale andhe burst awake, thrashed around, expressed his anal glands, ect. I pulled out the endotracheal tube and grabbed his scruff on both sides of his neck so he couldn't bite anyone, got him onto the floor while he was still trashing and screaming, and finally got him calm. So here's me, sitting in a corner with my baby, silently crying. It was so emotionally draining. We were keeping him pretty light on the anesthesia due his lack of breathing.
It's been about 6 and a half hours since then and he's still whimpering and acting like he's dopey; ears flat, tail down, ect. I think the whole experience totally traumatized him. I feel like a terrible mom...

Oh Brooke I'm so sorry that you and Kale are going through this I would be a mess too! I don't think I could be there if either of my babies were put under anesthesia for any reason. It's awesome that you're in the field and can make sure that he's ok. You're NOT a terrible mom at all!!! A bad mom would just let him be and not try to fix his issues.
Your baby will be just fine. Keep us posted please. Mya and Kody send Kale lots of kisses!!!

Aw, poor Kale. I'm so sorry to hear he had a bad reaction, that's got to be rough on both of you. You're not a terrible mom, you did what you thought was best to find out what was wrong with him. I understand how you feel though, and I can talk about it via PM or Facebook chat if you'd like.
Sounds encouraging that they didn't see anything apparent, and hopefully the Rimadyl will help him. I will definitely keep my fingers crossed for him that this resolves quickly.

Thanks guys! He's acting so pathetic right now. I hope it's nothing serious; me and Dr. Larsson we're talking about the possibility of his having elbow problems later no because of the way he walks. Hopefully he's the exception!
I'm so grateful for you guys and this amazing support system , words cannot describe...

Aw poor guy. Hope all works out good for him. Ill be going threw almost same thing tomarow with my little dog Hailey. Her and Josie got a little ruff sunday night and Hailey came away the worst of it. Shes walking with a limp a little bit or something. Vet said if not walking better in a few days to take her in. So tomarow I am taken her to get some xrays just to play it safe even tho she is walking much better and moving around alot more but still just a small limp and just wana be safe about it. Do they always dose the dog up to give them xrays?

Aw! I hope they don't find anything and she's just sore!
No not always, but in order to get clear views of the joints they need to be. We have to put them in awkward positions and they'd move around too much if they weren't unfortunately. We had to put Kale completely under; which is gas anesthesia. Most dogs just need to be sedated.

He's back to his normal self! WOO! He stil seems a little depressed, but he's wagging his tail and his ears aren't flat anymore. lol He definitely was having a drug reaction, He was acting like he was over-medicated. It was 10:30 at night when I took him to go potty for the final time and he still wasn't walking straight. He woke me up this morning all excited; probably cuz he could finally see straight! It's gonna be really hard to keep him quiet and not exercise him. oh goodness... Ugh and I just noticed that he chipped the enamel off one of his teeth trying to break out of the vet kennel.
Here's what he did most of the night; he was trying to keep himself awake for the longest time. Poor guy. He didn't understand why he felt so weird
Thanks everyone for your kindness and support, you have no idea how much it means to me.

Yeah......
We had Tika fall asleep in her water bowl the day we brought her back from being spayed. She just walked over for a drink and we heard a thud and she dropped her head right inside of it and passed out. She's fine, obviously the water spilled out and went everywhere, but she was really "Dopey" that night.
Picking her up I swear she was wagging her head and not her tail.
She pretty much tried to prop herself up to keep from falling asleep either until it was bed time.
I'm very very glad everything is back to normal for him and he is doing much better.
GL on keeping him quiet for the next couple of days .... We were told the same thing after the spay and we gave up after 3 or 4 days and started doing very short walks or she would do zoomies in the backyard jumping up and down the deck in full sprint.... The lesser of two evils I guess.
Best of luck again, ~Chris~

Oh no! Not a couple of days, that'd be easy! No a couple of weeks, possibly a month ... This house is going to be chaotic. I'll have to lower his caloric intake as well, so he won't gain any weight.

Aw poor Kale. And what a stressful time for you too. I'm glad he is more himself today and will keep my fingers crossed that the anti-inflammatories will work.
That's a long time to have to keep him quiet for. Good luck!!

I think these anti-inflammatories are making Kale sleepy, either that or he's just getting lazy! I thought that keeping him quiet was going to be the death of me, but it has been a breeze HA! Right around now he'd be running around the house trying to get me to take him outside to play the "Keep the toy away from mom until she fakes going inside" game lol But he's asleep on the floor twitching...
