After dog sitting a husky mix for a couple weeks, we fell in love with the breed. We've talked about getting a dog for a few years now, and I'm not really sure why we've waited.

Last week we found a 10 month old husky, named Isis, that was living with a family who couldn't keep her. We decided to take her in and have had a great time with her so far. She's black and white, and a real ham.

This week has been full of changes for her. She's changed houses, changed food, got her first leash and collar, got all the shots she'd missed, and just started her first heat (before we could get her in for a spay).

I'm sure I'll be spending a great deal of time here continuing to learn about how to best care for Isis, as well as enjoying some support, if I run into anything that isn't a simple answer.

Welcome! pictures please Smile

so how did you end up dog sitting since you don't have dogs? was it for a friend? glad you got to "test" the dog waters before biting the bullet. and super happy it was a half husky that got you to settle on a husky.

Well, we've been talking about getting a dog for a few years and it's always been one of those "sometime" things. I've always been around smaller dogs (grew up with a cocker) or clumsy dogs (friends with labs/mastiffs). I've always liked bigger dogs, but always feared the idea of what it would mean to have a dog that size in the house I guess.

Well, one day, a friend posted on facebook that she needed someone to keep her dog for a few days, until she could get new housing that would let her keep a pet. When she was down to the end, I couldn't bare to see a dog that was cared for, end up back in a shelter just because of a few days time. I told her I could watch the dog for her.

Pretty much everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. They were moving, so they were difficult to get ahold of, the dog wasn't trained, didn't listen, had fleas, crate was WAY too small for the dog, etc. But, through all of it, I felt like we could manage, if the first owners couldn't come back to take the dog.

After 2 weeks, they came back and picked their dog up. The house just felt empty without him there, and that's when we started searching for the right dog for us. We'd narrowed it down to a dachshund mix and a hound mix from the shelter, when we found out about Isis.

When we got to the house, Isis ran up and sat right between us. The whole time we asked about her history and all the information, she wouldn't leave our sides. The previous owners were amazed, saying she was mostly scared of people, and they'd never seen her act like that.

We ended up taking her home, and I don't think she'd have taken no for an answer.

Awww!! She knew that you were the right parents for her! Mya did the same thing when we went to see her. She was only 8 weeks and she automatically attacked my husband and wouldn't get away from us. It was between her and her sister, but Mya definitely picked us!!!

Congrats your new furbaby! You'll find lots of great advice on this forum and everybody is more than willing to step in and give you advice when needed!

One question that has come up, and if I need to, I'll create a new thread for it, is; how often should you change a doggy diaper? We don't diaper her while she's on her walks (obviously) or while she's in her crate, but she's loose in the house for around 4 hours between her afternoon and night walk.

This is week 1 of her heat.

We all have stories about the husky picking us Wink i think its just what they do. i was the 2nd call in for sierra and my heart broke, then 2 weeks later i got a call that it did not work out and she made it to her forever home with us Smile then when we looked for a 2nd we looked at like 5 huskies that day and when we brought jack in he sat right at our feet and with in 5 min. sierra and him were hunting a mouse in the house we were at! that sealed the deal for us and we could not be happier.

Isis is such a cutie! any picture is better then no picture Smile

To be honest, we're currently taking one step forward, two steps back with the whole training thing! I tell everyone at about 9 months some switch flipped in his little peanut brain and he became a rebellious teenager. I'm seriously contemplating a professional consultation...

(Disclaimer: We are in the middle of about 5 forecasted days of rain here, you know. Lack of regular, scheduled exercise is reeking havoc on all of our nerves! Rolling Eyes )

Haha, yeah, last night Isis got her first experience with real rain. When it was just wet, it was fun and exciting, when it was rain, she didn't want to get out from under the big tree in the front yard.

She made huge strides over the first 5 days, then she got 8 shots, and started her heat. Now she's not so sure about listening.

After coming from a 55lb, poorly trained male husky mix with fleas, the 35lb untrained husky is actually a blessing!

Thanks! I keep taking pictures, I just need to get around to posting them. It's a good thing she's not a kid, or she'd never forgive me for taking all these pictures of her in her diaper.
