Subject: Howling - A little concerned. Fri Jun 01, 2012 7:19 am
I pick my Freya up tomorrow - Excited!
I'm a little concerned about howling. I've never owned a Husky before and I read they like to howl. How often do they do it and how loud is it? I live in a small city and have a lot of siren vehicles go past my house. Do you think the sirens will set her off, thinking it's a 'pack memeber' calling her?
Thanks in advance.

My guess is she will get used to the sounds which occur often ( the sirens, for instance) and not howl. The howl is really a super-excited bark here at our house. It happens most when he wants something and we have not figured out what he wants yet. Usually things like food from our table and things he will not get anyway no matter how much he barks and howls. Our Sabaka is not really much of a howler. He will bark a few quite woofy barks and then a long howly bark. It's kind of a combination.
I would guess that when she is first left alone she may bark/howl until she learns that you will return and then will have less anxiety.
Huskies are normally a rather quiet breed. I have had one really quiet husky... and then there is Sabaka... He's very "mouthy" for a husky so I just try to teach him "quiet" as a command. They're smart dogs so they learn quickly... They are stubborn dogs so they disobey often!
And, by the way, a husky howling is not really annoying, in my opinion. I'm not sure your neighbors will agree Good luck!!

Coquito talks a lot but doesn't howl unless you repeated squeeze a toy with a very loud squeeker. He barks when he tries to beg for table food. Also when he wants to play he makes a funny throaty half growl/ howl. Which I recorded and made a ringtone out of but have no clue how to post a sound file on here

Blitz never howls although I wish he did. Diesel is 9 weeks and I've heard him howl maybe a total of 2 times. I try and provoke him though. I've noticed that most huskies that I know if they didn't grow up around the howling they don't really do it. But every dog is different!

Well aren't you guys lucky, Delilah is a super howler. If she want's anything, she howls. Outside? Howl w/whining. Food? Super Howl. Petting? Mini Howl. The rabbit outside? Repetitive howling. I've pick up on her howls.
We have almost got her saying I love you. When that happens I'll start posting that howl too. Haha

Ginger sings loud and proud - sometimes starting off soft and then getting louder and louder. Storm talks a lot, low and soft. Ginger will sing mostly when we prompt her or when Storm decides to have a long conversation about something with us, then she'll join in which then makes Storm talk more and talk louder until he starts to howl but he doesn't have a higher pitch than his low, soft talk so it comes out kind of squeaky.
It's starting to be a daily morning thing where they will both sing for a couple of minutes, very loud but I love it.

I love it too Claudia. My brother lives with us and he doesn't like it, but I don't care - Chris doesn't even mind when Cato wakes him up talking.

Brewer has thankfully learned that howling gets our attention! Time to wake up, go outside, go for a run / walk, I am hungry...please feed me, I'm bored, etc. Otherwise, he is a very quiet and relatively independent dog.
His barking is limited to local prey that challenge him. Squirrels, toy dogs aka "ankle-biters", and cats. Ducks and rabbits get the "prey mode"!

Mine don't howl much - they talk when prompted or encouraged but howling is rare. However in my neighborhood if you hear sirens you hear all the other dogs howling haha- my chihuahuas howled.

Kale only "talks" when he's excited or when he wants something. My Doxie on the other hand tries to "howl" when she hears sirens...Kale looks at her like she's nuts

That's Kody for ya! Who would've though he and Sabaka had something in common?! Kody wooos a lot too, but like Lisa said, when he wants something.
My three don't randomly howl. Mya will "talk" or whine for the most part. The whining is annoying. Kody woosss and Asia whines when it's feeding time or howls when she's left behind.
Mya throwing a fit over dinner. This is more of the whining:
Kody wooing/talking because he wants to play:
Asia howling because we left her at home:

The howl is a sound to cherish, its not loud but will get your attention. Love it and cherish it you'll never regret it.
When Mylo was still here he often howled in his sleep, long drawn out howls which of course woke me but it always was music to my ears.
Biko howls to sirens but it really quite soft and unless I'm near him I can't even hear it, I just see the motions.

I agree Len. I love to hear a husky howl. Dakota only howled w/the noon town bell but it was a very low howl and definately didn't disturb the neighbors. I have three huskies in my house and they are the quietest dogs of the block. Willow is super quiet. Its a rare occasion when she makes a noise.

Faolan doesn't howl much at all, but he does talk! That's how he got his nickname. He talks in a low growly noise, it sounds kind of like "Bararar", so we call him Bar or BarBar.

Its different from dog to dog... We won't be able to say... Most people think they are wolves and will just sit and howl... This is very unlikely... Most of the time they howl/talk when excited, Kiara does it when she hasn't seen someone in a long time or I get home after work... I have a min pin who barks at everything, its quite annoying but Kiara doesn't make a sound unless shes excited or trying to play.

Her nicknames are a little rediculous. There is at least 25 of them, my bf is half Mexican haha. Seriously I should upload the video of him and I talking to her, it's so embarrassing.

I take Cali to local dog bakery JUST to hear her howl lol. She is very quiet unless I take her kennel mate Mika away from her. My girls usually are pretty quiet dogs. But as I have said with other topics is "there is nothing standard about this breed"

Look at all you people with your semi(mostly) quiet dogs! I will give any of you Bella if you want a noisemaker
In all seriousness - it really depends on the dog. Siberians in general are known as "talkers" and their vocalizations range from barking (they can learn to - it's not a normal vocalization for them) to howling.
Bella howls quite a bit, be it out of excitement, because she wants food or water, because she wants to go potty or to play or because we just came home from being out. So I have generally a pretty talkative dog.
