Clueless when it comes to raw Empty
PostSubject: Clueless when it comes to raw   Clueless when it comes to raw EmptyFri Nov 11, 2011 6:38 pm

So I was looking at a bunch of other posts about raw and such and my eyes started to hurt from reading so I just decided to start my own question topic.

Blitz is almost 2, I'm interested to see if raw is a good diet for him as well as my GSD/Lab since I'd feel horrible giving Blitz some but not Bullet.

I saw that you have to start slowly to introduce them to it and that for a 50 lb dog they only need 1 lb of meat a day. So that gives me what portion he would need. But I'm curious as to if it's affordable. We feed them Eukanuba so we essentially only buy 3-4 20 lb bags of food a month. Does it cost about the same as when you feed dry food or is it more expensive? We live in Hawaii so I'm guessing our meat prices are probably a tad higher than most, but just curious as to back on the mainland if it is affordable on a tight budget.

Thanks everyone!

I find it cheaper to feed raw than prepared foods like kibble, wet, or dehydrated/freeze-dried raw. But it will depend on the prices of meat where you live. I would start out by pricing meat in your area to get an idea of how much the price will differ compared to what you are currently spending on kibble.

This thread might have some tips you can use to shop around for meat prices:
What? What's "inexpensive" meat?

I know stuff is a lot more expensive in HI so I would price things out first before making any moves if cost is a concern.

And yes, a raw diet (if done correctly) is wonderful for both your dogs. It does require a bit of research and it can be overwhelming at first but take your time and ease into it when you are comfortable and ready. I'd have a massive headache if I tried to comprehend all that goes into raw feeding in one day. Wink

Thanks!! I figure if I want to start doing it right now is the best time because I am not working and not in school, so I have until June when we move home and I start back into everything to learn the ropes! We have tons of asian markets here, I just will have to find them and take a few friends - going alone is quite dangerous for military spouses over here. Clueless when it comes to raw 85993

I'll definitely be doing my research and seeing what to get and such. Definitely am going to need another freezer! We needed one anyway though... Can't wait to get home, then we can go hunting and provide most of the meat ourselves!! Out here all there is to hunt is wild boar... and they're evil little things.

So I posted on my army wives facebook group asking if anyone is cleaning out their freezer if I could buy their freezer burnt or a little old meat, another girl does the same diet for her dog and she's going on leave and giving me 10 pound so of meat, as well as veggies for FREE! Smile I love the pooch community Smile

Ever since starting the dogs on the raw diet and getting them neutered Blitz has become so much more active! I no longer have a lazy husky! Now he actually wants to play and do stuff! Smile
