| So on Sat. i took S&J to the new dog park at our place before heading out to dinner for the night. we were the only ones there for a bit till a guy and his son came with there female pit-bull, i watched them walking to the park and he was having her sit and wait as i could tell she was getting excited and he was working on her. they got in the one gate and S&J were all over getting worked up to play and she seemed to be a bit rough behind the fence, i had S&J back up and give them room to enter. they came in the dog still leashed with a gentle lead on as well. she was bearing teeth and he rolled her, i got S&J to back up again and to go off and run. i really wanted to say something to him about leaving but i did not, she seemed to be calming down and he was saying she is till young and gets worked up. well with S&J off playing he let her go and she went for Jack he did his bark for play and then they both ran towards us and she clamped down on the top of his head right behind his left ear. i was FREAKING out, the guy could not get her to let go and poor jack was screaming, it seemed like forever but then a voice popped in my head saying WATER BOTTLE i have my lumbar pack on with the water and bowl in it, i got the water and just sprayed her with it and she let go. thank god that had been talked about on here and i remembered, it does work. sierra was in attack mod and i had to keep her back while checking on jack as the guy removed his dog from the park. there was another man and women in the small dog area and the lady had come in to check on us. i was a shaking mess, it seemed the dog only had jacks fur and there was no blood or marks, thank god! the man came back in to check on us and said she had never done that before, i told him maybe he should only bring her back with no one there. i got his info on my phone just in-case, at least he was being nice about it. poor jack has been sad all weekend, im sure his head hurts as he has not been wanting us to touch the area i think it took me over an hr to calm down, Ken kept telling me it was crazy i was so worked up and i told him he was not there and if he was he would be shaking as bad as i was. its never something i every want to have to deal with again but i know thats not gonna happen. lesson learned-i will have on me at all times WATER and my phone and i will pay closer attention to my gut when i sense something is not right. just sharing with you all. _________________ |

| Poor Jack, but I'm so relieved to hear he is OK! And am so relieved to hear the guy of the femail Pitt Bull was being responsible to check on you and Jack and left his phone number just in case!
I've seen a few times when an altercation occurs at a dog park that the owner of the dog that has bit the other dog just leave with no concern for the other involved! Situations like that make me hesitate to visit the busier dog parks as I notice that's when I also see other dog owners not paying attention to their dogs!

| I would have been a mess. I was at the park with Libby once and it is a leashed walking park, I was getting ready to head back to the car when all of a sudden I had 3 dogs teeth showing running stright fot Libby and I. I pushed her behind me as much as possible and was ready to start kicking if need be. Of couse she was fighting me because her instinct to protect me kicked in. Then a guy walk around the corner and called the dogs, but one kept coming. He had to run up and grab it. Who the hell comes to a park, where kids can be and has 3 dogs like that and not a lease in sight. It scared the crap out of me, I was shaking after that. I couldn't imagine if the dog reached her, like it did Jack. Quick thinking on your part. |

| Wow, that's quite a story. ! I'm glad Jack is OK. This story is why I am leery of dog parks. I keep Bodhi on a long lead until i think every thing is cool. But this wouldn't have helped you.
And I must say I am leery of pit bulls. I am sure that are great ones who are well-mannered and whose owners can control them. But they worry me because of their unpredictability. When I lived in the city, my next door neighbor had two. They were always friendly to me and seemed sociable. Then one day their garage door was open when an old man was walking by with his collie. The pit bulls shot out the kitchen door, past the owner and clamped on the poor dog's neck. The pit bull owners, the collie owner and I all desperately tried to get them to unclamp unsuccessfully. They were attached for a long time until the owner threw a bucket of water on them. The collie was so badly hurt she had to be put to sleep. The collie owner was broken up by it. He really loved that dog.
Things like that kind of stay with you. |

| I'm glad Jack is okay after that. I hope he doesn't start having issues with female pits or dog parks as a result of this incident.
We've had too many close encounters at dog parks that I refuse to take my dogs anymore unless there is a husky meet up. It's not my dogs that I am worried about, it's others' dogs. It's a shame that the bad apples have to ruin it for the rest of us but it's not worth risking my dogs' safety. I am always much more alert and wary with any bully breeds at the dog park too, not that I am discriminating...it's just statistics. And if any dog behaves questionably I will leave right away. Definitely listen to your gut, Jenn. If I saw a dog brought to the dog park bare teeth I would have left immediately no questions asked. Poor Jack. _________________ |

| what sucks the most is this is our NEW park, not many come and we have been alone most of the time. i also know our area is not that great and i was afraid this would happen at some point because with the run-ins i have had walking have shown me not many care about their dogs. i figured they would not bother taking them to the park.... we will still go to the park so he does not get afraid of going and i will trust my gut and speak up next time, i was giving him the benefit of the doubt since it seem she calmed down. she just have him clamped in a way he could not even reach her to bite back. this was the first time any dog has made such contact, while walking and being charged i can get myself out front and they don't get close, i feel bad i did not prevent this from happening when i could have. _________________ |

| Jen, don't beat yourself up over this. You were prudent and protective of Jack at the start. It was the other dog owner who should have known his dog better. He should have left when he saw you or at least warned you about his dog's proclicity.
These people piss me off to no end! Their dogs attack, and they just laugh it off. "Ha, ha, little dog fight." No, your dog attacked mine. All the while my heart is going like a jack hammer... |

| Melissa, im pretty strong and i have a style about it. in most cases i can see the dog coming, i put both leashes in one hand around the handle and then i take the free hand and grab the leases near the end and pull them together and back at the same time as i step in front of them and we STOP. i wait for the charging dog to make the first move to see what i do next. i also look for any rock or stick i can chuck at it before it gets close and then i have a kick waiting if i need it. we have been lucky and i have only had to kick a few dogs and only one has gotten close enough that it got a short snap in. maybe i will have ken do a video of my moves?... will not be the same with no charging dog but an idea. _________________ |

| I feel so bad for anyone that has to see that happen to a loved pet. I have a friend thaty was walking his sheltie when he was about 10yrs old and 2 german shepards came running across the school yard and just tore the dog apart. Thank god someone drove past and got him and the dog into the car and to the vet but she was so bad off they had to put her to sleep as well. This incident is what implimented a leash law in their town and the family with the other dogs had to move from in the city limits. If my dog was the one to attack another animal like that, I would have a hard time trusting them again. What a horrible sight for him, to this day he won't talk about it. He gets so scared when other dogs are around and walks with me and Libby. |

| Poor Jack! I'm glad he's okay. Which dog park was this Jenn? That way I can avoid it unless it's a meetup or at least be on the lookout for a young pitbull? We've been lucky so far, in that we haven't had any major altercations. But then again, my two don't go looking for other dogs, they're content to run around together alone. |

| Poor Jack! I'm so sorry this happened to you. It's such a shame when owners can't or won't control their dogs, and other people and dogs get hurt as a result. Was that the new park by your house? _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Is that dirt, sand or a mix of dirt and sand? I like the big tree in the middle of the park with benches around it.

| Sorry to hear Jenn, it's scary no matter how prepared you are.
While I may get my ass chewed I just can't understand why people with Pit Bulls take them to dog parks. They know the stigma that breed has and dog aggression is so common. I just can't understand it. Why would you risk that? _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?!
