Upset tummy from antibiotics Empty
PostSubject: Upset tummy from antibiotics   Upset tummy from antibiotics EmptySat Oct 15, 2011 8:30 pm

I wish I had thought of giving Finn probiotics when he started antibiotics. 8 days after he started them, his gut is thoroughly unhappy and so is he. Now he won't eat (but he's still drinking plenty) so I'm having a hard time getting the probiotics in him. Any body have any suggestions? Of course if he doesn't start eating soon we are going back to the vet. The probiotic comes in a powder so I've been adding it to his water today.

If you can pick up a 12cc or bigger syringe from you vet, you could try syringe feeding the water and probiotic together, that way you know how much Finn is actually getting. Hope your baby is feeling better soon! Sad

Have you tried chicken broth? I know it's sort of the opposite, but when Sky got dehydrated once and I wanted her to drink, I mixed some chicken broth into her water. Maybe Finn would go for it since it's liquid. It would be a step towards real food, at least.

Dogs can survive weeks without food, so don't worry about starving him. When Kale has an upset tummy I fast for 24 to 48 hours to make sure all the bad stuff has gone through his system and during that time syringe feed pedialyte to keep up his electrolytes. I never give him stuff that his tummy is going to have to digest cause that seems to make the bad "bugs" overstay their welcome lol

Hmmm, that could explain why Sky seems to have low energy levels for a couple days after a tummy problem. I'll try that next time!
