So i decided to be responsible and have Mia spayed. Although the only thing I am regretting is using the vet ($300) instead of the various budget spay programs that exist. I see it as at least if there is a complication post op that she is in good hands and they at least know her history at the pet hospital AND it is just 1/4 mile away from my house. Hopefully there won't be any complications/reactions with the stitches.

Do you have to put the cone on? Do they give you one after you have your dog fixed? Just wondering for when we get Snow spayed when she's old enough.

yea same question about the vet giving you the cone post op? so they don't bite and chew out the stitches is my guess, plus less chance of infection?

Cone is to prevent licking and pulling out stitches. Licking=infection which = antibiotics.

What hypers987 said. I had to pay for the cone, it is prevention since I had to leave for work.

We payed around 300 too, but I don't regret it. It was worth it because spaying is so invasive. We will probably go to a clinic if we get Cato neutered, but it's a very different kind of surgery.

We had an interesting experience with Delilah and the cone, so we switched to the comfy cone and she actually would walk around. With the regular cone she just stood there and looked pitiful.

Congratulations on the spay! I don't have a problem with using humane Society clinics for spay/neuters. I was going to have Bella done there - but since she has a heart problem the risk to going to my ASPCA was too high since they don't have the proper monitoring or equipment to manage her if something would have happened.

I payed 346 for Bella's spay - which included special anesthesia and special monitoring. I didn't get a cone - my vet won't give a cone if they notice the dog doesn't bother the incision/sutures. She didn't mess with them at all for the 10 days but I could stay with her and monitor her. If you can't be with her crate and cone are pretty essential.

First my lab cost me almot 500 to spay at my vet, oh yeah I was very surprised at that price. And my vet did not give me a cone, she told me if she bothers with the area, I could come back and borrow one. She never even licked her stitches thank god.

It's great that she was spayed.

For future needs, let me know, and I'll see if I can help out, cost effectively. I know a lot of great people/place!

& I could have gotten you into the rescue clinic! Smile LOL

She has gotten big, and pretty!!

Our puppy was nuetered just last week. Unfortunately for him, all he wanted to do was lick his wound area, so he ended up having to wear the cone for an entire week. We ended up going to the pet store and buying a soft comfy (less noisy) one because the one we got at the Vet's was the big hard plastic one. The poor things was bumping into everything with that radar dish on his head!

Thanks for spaying her Smile

Yes you could have go to a cheaper clinic but by going to your normal vet they now have all the records together, and your right peace of mind is sometimes worth a higher cost. Hope she heals fast and leaves the stiches alone

Thanks Tiff! Like jBealer said, I really don't mind paying my normal vet to do it since they will have the records all in one place. The nice thing is that the vet that operated on Mia called me this morning to check up on her. And Mia is also bumping into anything and everything in her path. It's kind of funny and pitiful to look at. She hasn't been barking much, just whining instead, I'm guessing that it hurts to bark since she has been cut open.
