| The past week or two, Neo hasnt been eating all of his dog food, so I am cutting hmi down to a half of can of wet with his dry in the morning and afternoon. Is it safe to refrigerate the other half of the food? I dont want to waste it, so I have been giving the other half to the lab, wich he does not need, hes too fat already. Obviously I wouldnt want to refrigerate it in the can, but would putting it in a ziplock container suffice? |

| I store mine in there with one of the doggie can lids. I've had no issues serving it even 3 to 4 days later. |

| I only use canned food on occasion as a treat to stuff in his Kong. One can stuffs about 4 Kongs, therefore, mine is refrigerated with a lid in the can for 3-4 days as well. |

| Generally canned food is fine refrigerated for up to 3 days. I've kept canned food in the fridge even longer than that before and it's always been fine.
Not all cans are the same and I believe typically it's the really cheap pet food (think store brand and really crappy canned foods) that are an issue. With the really cheap foods they don't use as good of a can as better companies use so the really cheap ones may have the potential to react with the food and leech toxins into your dogs canned food. Again though, as long as you're not buying crap then you should be okay just sticking a plastic can top on the dog food can and refrigerating as is. If you're a "better safe than sorry" type then of course you can always transfer the canned food to a plastic container and that would eliminate all worry from the start.
I know you didn't ask about this but I'll just post it for general reference. When mixing kibble and canned or kibble and water and refrigerating it to save it for another meal if your dog doesn't eat, do remember it will not keep the same way as canned dog food and is best used within 24 hours. I wouldn't keep kibble that has been wet (via mixing with water or canned) longer than 24 hrs. _________________ |
