| Hey guys, just a few questions. I know that (or at least I think I know that) uncooked bones are alright, as a general rule. I tried doing some research, and people had said many many times that uncooked chicken is absolutely safe for dogs. But here's where I have a problem. I have some extra raw drumsticks, is it safe for me to give them to Aevyn? I gave him one to try, but watched him very carefully. He crunched the bone pretty easily, and the pieces seemed sharp. Couldn't this hurt him when he swallows? I know uncooked they aren't supposed to splinter, but the edges were still very sharp. We ended up trading him a different treat for the bone, just because I wasn't sure. Help! |

| You should be holding the drumstick for him and let him tear off the meat and things. Chicken bones are thin and brittle, so I don't really pretty for them to be chewed on. Uncooked or not, how easy is it to snap a chicken bone? If I wanted Koda to chew a bone he always was given beef ribs, turkey necks, marrow bones, ox tail... |

| Yes, it is safe for you to give them to Aevyn and you're doing right by watching him closely to ensure he chews the bone up rather than swallowing it down.
Bones, even raw, are going to be hard. They make up the skeleton that holds up the body after all! Even I was nervous about the little, sharp pieces of bone that would break off and potentially be a hazard going down the throat. I too worried about my dogs' throats and questioned the safety in the beginning. I decided to trust that huge community of raw feeders and let my dogs do what comes naturally.
I've been feeding raw for 11 months now and I'd say the majority of it is comprised of chicken quarters for my sibe, and chicken thighs for my Chihuahua. In all that time they've NEVER had a single problem so I no longer worry about the chicken bones as long as they are chewing them up (which they always do).
I think Aevyn will be fine as long as he's chewing the bone, but obviously don't do anything that you're not comfortable with. _________________ |

| Mya and Kody eat drumsticks almost every evening for dinner and at first it kind of freaked me out also. Never had any issues with them either and they are done within 2 minutes! |

| Okay, that's a bit comforting at least. I had been watching him like I hawk I was so worried and within seconds he'd had the bone cracked and, like I said, it seemed like the edges were pretty sharp. I guess I'll try giving them to him again, just with keeping a close eye on him still to make sure. He definitely was interested, I felt so bad having to take it away from him, but I just wasn't sure if those edges were going to cause a problem for him. Thanks. |
