| Subject: Siku is at the vet :( Mon Aug 29, 2011 4:10 pm | |
| Siku may have pyometra. We were going to get her spayed right when we got back from WY, cause she wasn't due to go into season again until October. But, of course, she immediately went into heat. She is about over her heat now (lasted about 3 weeks!), but yesterday I noticed a lot of pussy discharge. So she's at the vet's today for some bloodwork, x-ray, and possible emergency spay. I was crying when I left the vets. Hated leaving her there. But on a good note, her temp is normal and she's been acting like her regular self except for vomitting the other day. So I'm hoping I caught it early enough. And the vet said it's uncommon for such a young dog to get it. Anyone know what would cause it in a young dog? I'm going to ask the vet when I, hopefully, go to pick her up in a few hours. The waiting sucks. Poor Elara has been miss velcro dog since she noticed Siku's been gone. I think she misses her sister. _________________ -Sara |

| Just called since it's been a while. They haven't done the x-ray yet, because someone was working on their power and kept turning it off and on. So all x-rays had to wait until after lunch. Wish they would have told me that this morning, I would have just brought her back at 2! But they did say that from the sample they looked at under the scope, it did look like pyometra, but they won't be 100% positive until the x-ray gets done. Poor girl! I heard her whinning in the background on the phone. At least they are suffering for not telling me about the power issue! (She can be very LOUD!) lol. _________________ -Sara |

| Oh and a pyometra spay is like $300 more expensive than a normal spay. Not what I need right now. _________________ -Sara |

Yeah. You can just flush it out and put the dog on antibiotics, but if you aren't planning on breeding, the best way is to spay the dog. _________________ -Sara |

| $300 more!!! If I recall Mya's spay was around $160 so that's about $500 on her spay! You have to do what you have to do though. Poor girl. She must be wondering why she was left there. I HATE LEAVING THEM AT THE VET!!! |

| Siku is home. Her x-rays confirmed open pyometra. So I need to schedule her spay for tomorrow or the next day. They didn't know why a dog so young would get it. They thought maybe because she had such a long season or maybe her uterus is shaped wrong. So she's going crazy now. Just got done doing zoomies in the backyard. _________________ -Sara |

| Aww poor Siku, sorry to hear that. Hope it gets taken care of quickly so you can put this whole mess behind you. Glad she's otherwise feeling okay though.
Faith's spay cost $500 but she was a special circumstance as well. Do you mind if I ask what vet you're going to? _________________ |

| It was Florida Wild Vet in Deland. They said it would cost $600 to $700! So I called a lady in our husky group who works at a vet and loves the vet. She scheduled me in for tomorrow and it will cost anywhere between $95 to $150. Much better price! And it helps when she raves over how much she likes the vet, plus she'll be there. _________________ -Sara |

I really don't know. I found two other vets that only charged around $180. I know my vet's noral spay is expensive at $300 to $400. I guess they do extra things like do an iv the whole surgery, but I really don't know where all the other money goes into. I like my vet for normal things, cause they are more holistic, but not for big things like this. They can't think they can charge this much and keep loyal customers. I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to keep them or not. I may just go to them for vaccinations, since they use, at least for rabies, a different vaccine that's supposed to be safer. But I think I'll find another vet for other things. It's funny, Siku is only 1.5yrs old and she's already been to 4 different vets! I just can't find the perfect match! We'll see how I like this 5th vet, though it's about 30mins away. But has great reviews on google. _________________ -Sara |
