PostSubject: Fish oils?   fish oil supplements - Fish oils? EmptyTue Aug 30, 2011 12:49 pm

I've heard that it is good for a dog's skin and coat to give them fish oils. Well I have a mostly full bottle of Cod Liver Oil that I was wondering if it would be good to give one capsule every so often to my two dogs? Faolan is still young and my other dog is a little papillon under 10 pounds, so if Cod Liver Oil is something I could give them, how much/often would you give?

I'd read a while ago that when supplementing fish oils it was better to supplement regular fish oil or salmon oil than cod liver oil. I can't remember where it was that I read it...I just remember making a mental note to myself that if I ever decide to give a fish oil that I didn't want cod liver oil. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I believe I also read that Cod Liver oil has high Vitamin A which can build up and be a problem so daily dosing of CLO is not recommended. However Fish Oil does not pose that risk and can be supplemented daily.

I don't know the dosage of fish oil but I believe Kristina gives fish oil caps and she's posted the dosage she gives her dogs somewhere around here before. I'm hoping she'll chime in when she gets a chance.

I don't use fish oils but coconut oil for my dogs, I can't stand the smell of fish oils nor do I want to have to worry about mercury so coconut oil it is for my furries. Smile

That is the reason to stay away from Cod Liver Oil, to much of a needed nutrient can do more damage then good.
I give Adobo & Biko a 1000mg fish cap twice a day once in the morning and then at dinner time. (Just like me Very Happy )

Ginger gets fish protein base food and treats and she often gets complimented on her soft, fluffy coat. Storm's coat was a little on the coarse side when we first adopted him, but we've noticed a difference in his coat being softer now - Storm also gets fish protein base foods and treats.

I tried coconut oil with Ginger and Storm - while Storm did OK (not great), Ginger went soft even with just 1/4 tsp so no coconut oil for my furkiddies Sad

Sorta late in responding to this post - I apologize for my absense, but I've been back and forth to Florida dealing with some family medical issues.

Val got me on coconut oil and I've been extremely pleased with it. Drogo's coat has always been very soft and shiny but I've noticed an improvement in it's appearance after putting him on some organic pure virgin coconut oil. I ordered the brand Nutiva.

I have Bella on 1200 mg fish oil softgels.

Cardiologist recommended working her up to four a day. I've only been giving her one. I'll think I'll up it to two or maybe even three (worked up to over a three week time). The softgels have 360mg EPA/DHA per softgel and she was recommended a minimum of 180 EPA and 120 DHA.

A quick google search gave me a few sites all saying basically the same thing:
Skin and Fur health, Joint pain/Arthritis, Dry/Brittle Nails, Mental health and Hearth health. Recommended for also treating allergies and skin conditions. They are also favored in cases of Kidney disease and elevated cholesterol.

As I said above, Bella's Cardiologist recommended giving her 4 capsules a day (She has subaortic stenosis). She gets regular old people fish oil 1200 mg. I'll probably only give her two of these day starting next week since they have 360mg EPA and DHA (Cardiologist recommended a minimum of 180mg EPA and 120mg DPA)per softgel. For now she is only getting one a day.

I bought Nature's Bouny odorless Fish Oil 1200mg/omega 3. Should probably get the "" Omega 3&6 though.
