Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

He has a daily medication (Quamicalm sp?) and then on days we know we're gonna have storms, we give him Xanax.

That's Clomicalm, a drug specifically marketed to help relieve separation anxiety. There are other drugs that are prescribed for anxiety, including fluoxetine (Prozac). Check with your veterinarian. A non-prescription nutritional formulation called Compose might be something you would want to check into - I had a client use it with her very anxious dog and it was effective. Whatever you do, please remember that behavior modification is a necessary part of changing your dog's emotional response to his situation - medication alone is not appropriate or effective. You might want to also check into the Through A Dog's Ear music for dogs and recordings of thunderstorms to use for desensitization, but please seek the guidance of a knowledgeable professional when embarking on any kind of behavior modification program. Good luck!

Would this work to help my Blaze with his separation anxiety and early morning yippings for no reason? We are at our wit's end with the early morning ritual of barking to get us up only to keep barking. We are on probation with our landlady and could be evicted if he keeps it up. We need some serious help! His anti-bark collar (TERMINATOR 2) didn't work and he figured out how to get the battery case cover off and knock the battery out within 2 days!

It would be worth a try. Also a spray bottle with a consistent quiet command.

I think it would be worth a try - I know a trainer that has used the Thundershirt to help with a couple of issues other than seperation anxiety.

If you are looking into getting the Thundershirt, our rescue has them for $20 and proceeds go to help our huskies! Just let me know and I'll have one sent to you.

I have no idea why I told you the Thundershirt we have was $20 - I'm sorry I misinformed everyone.

Here is the info I got back on Thundershirts through North Star Siberian Husky Rescue:

A size small is really small for a Husky - it fits dogs that are only 15-25 pounds. And I don't have any smalls.

I do have a medium, which fits 26-40 pound dogs.

The price is $39.95+5.50 for shipping. It's easier to say it's a total of $45.00.

Let me know if they are interested. They can send a ck to the PO Box, or we can give them our PayPal address.

Let me know if you are still interested.
