I am a house wife in Iowa, and tomorrow I become a new mommy to a 5 year old husky! She was dumped at a vet's office essentially. She is quite a well-behaved husky, and the current family who is fostering her says she is remarkably well behaved and knows sit, stay, down, shake, and rollover, that she is reliably house trained, and has excellent recall. Why she was dumped at the vets is something I suppose we won't really ever know, but someone's loss is my new family member - We were very excited to find an older husky, as we did not feel like housebreaking and teething Any advice for a new mommy? I have taught a few obedience classes, worked extensively with a number of breeds, and shown great danes and pekingese, as well as dealt with dominant breeds (my last dog was a rottweiler who suffered a brain tumor and a subsequent death ) I have never owned a husky myself, though, so I'm venturing into a brave new world!

Congrats! How exciting!! Once you go husky, you never go back. She sounds perfect! And you sound like you have extensive experience with dogs and will be able to handle anything a husky throws your way. Regarding recall, most of us don't allow our huskies off leash since they love to RUN! Please post pictures once you get her!

Welcome and congrats on being a first time Husky mom! Regardless of recall ability generally most Husky owners keep them on leashes unless we're in an enclosed area. While they are a very intelligent breed, they are highly manipulative! They will "allow" you to think they're recalling because you are asking... but in reality they are recalling because they feel like it! They have a well established prey drive and live to run.. and run... and run. And that prey drive often will overrule any recall which can sometimes lead to accidents or a lost Husky They are a fabulous breed, but I may be biased. Can't wait to see pictures! _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! Join our facebook meetup group!

Congrats! She seems like the perfect husky! I have a 5yr old female and she's calmed down so much in the past year that it's not even funny. My 11 month old male drives her UP THE WALL wanting to play..lol. I would never leave either of them off leash either. They will definitely run! Given that mine have AWFUL recall. I can't even get them to come inside from the yard without bribing them with a treat Even if their recall was on point I still wouldn't trust them. One cat or squirrel and they are outta there!!! I can't wait to see pictures of your new baby!

Welcome! My little girl has her own mind and therefore awful recall to the point where bribery with a treat doesn't even work at times. My Demon on the other hand generally listens pretty well and I'll use HIM as the bribery with Dakota! Off leash isn't even an option unless we're in an enclosed dog park or yard. lol
