Excersise and the heat? Empty
PostSubject: Excersise and the heat?   Excersise and the heat? EmptyWed Jul 27, 2011 6:08 pm

I understand fully that my new husky Neo, is going to need way more than the occasional 20 minute stroll around the block. We have a park with a 3 1/2 mile walking trail that I think would be perfect for his outings. I do worry about the heat though. Here in tn, it is on average 97-100 during the day with a high humidity level. He is only a year and a half old, and I dont want to overdo it, but I want him to expell his energy on the trails and not in my house. I am working very early each morning, so morning excersise for a long period of time isnt feasible. At dusk, the mosquitos are so bad you would think you are getting ganged up on! I also beleive they are imune to bug spray. So what I want to know, is Neo going to be able to handle the heat, or should i get up at 3 am every morning, or deal with the bug bites all over my legs at dusk in order for him to get his exercise?

Early morning would be your best bet since it's generally cooler in the morning than even at night after the sun goes down. Even in the evenings if you feel the concrete it is often still hot to the touch several hours after the sun has set...if your walking route is not concrete then that won't be an issue.

If early morning won't work then evenings will have to suffice and you'll have to deal with the insect problem. You still won't be able to get as much exercise in as you'd probably like but you do what you can and definitely watch his body language/signs and stop when necessary.

The walkway is paved. There is a few spots on the trail that run along the creek, I guess
i could always plastic the backseat of the car for the wet ride home!

Ask Neo but I'm sure he'll want both.

I take my pup out to a path at evening, I make her walk on the grass to help with the heat.

Storm doesn't do well in the heat. The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler helps, but he just doesn't like the heat unless he's sunbathing and even then, he's only good for that for about 15 minutes. Don't forget water if you're taking a stroll in the heat....
