| Last Friday my wife surprised me with a Beautiful black and white blue eyed husky that she rescued from the shelter. I have wonted one for a very long time. We named him Kota, he is a great dog. I have read a lot on the bread and loved all that I have read the only thing that I am not too sure about is the weather here in southeast Texas. Should I try to keep him in the house in the summer or not, I really don’t want to keep him in the house when we are not their because I have a little Chihuahua and don’t trust Kota alone with him just yet. Thanks for your help. |

| I would never leave my husky outside while leaving the house. First he.would escape, second, someone might take him. If there is no access to inside then especially not in the summer. Neo gets hot and starts panting hard after about 30 min in the summer. I guess it would spend on wether or not you have shade. But.i for sure would not leave him out in the heat for too long of a period.
Crate train to make sure he does not get your little dog or anything else. For his safety as well as the ankle biter. Some do just fine, but until you know fir sure, better safe than sorry. I would not just worry about the other dog. Think about your couch cushions, blinds, or anything else For that mater. |

| Welcome! congrats on the adoption! that was a nice surprise from your wife, im glad to know you have read up some on huskies but reading is not the same as having do you know how old Kota is? with having a " ankle biter" (like that Jill) you want to make sure Kota does not have a intense pray drive as your right your little Chihuahua could be in danger. I would 2nd the going out and buying a good size crate and crate train Kota, it will be the safest for all involved, i would NEVER leave a husky or any dog out side with out being home, Jill gave great reasons why. for the summer in TX you will be keeping him inside and you will have to do your DAILY walks early in the am (before the heat) and late at night when it cools off some. Kota will let you know when its to hot for him. and please DO NOT SHAVE HIM! it will only wreck his coat and make the heat worse on him. got any pictures:) _________________ |

| To 2nd what Jenn said, do not ever let anyone shave him. We have a Husky in the FL panhandle, and she did just fine over the summer. They won't want to exercise much during the heat of the day, so keep him inside and do the exercising in the morning and at night. We also have a little kiddie pool for ours.
As far as your Chihuahua goes, start training the Husky immediately to leave it alone. We have 2 cats in the house, and Ghost generally respects them (besides occasionally playing with one of them). That being said, if we need to leave or we go to sleep, Ghost is crated. That way I know there won't be any problems while we aren't looking and we know she isn't going to get into trouble outside.
Welcome to the forum, and best of luck with Kota! _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | I am just gassing he is about 1.5 to 2 years old and he is not an ankle biter I have not even seen him growl, he dose howl real beauty though. My wife said something about a crate, but I did not want to get him in something that looks like a jail but that looks like what I am going to do for he’s and my Chihuahua safety not to minchin my house. I don't think I can post pics here. Can you tell me how? |

| Aww, congrats on your newest addition! Kota is gorgeous! I would never trust a sibe alone with any small animal or dog for safety reasons, even if they do normally get along. Huskies tend to be very rough and can accidentally hurt your chihuahua without meaning to. I have a husky and two chis so I can totally relate. All of the injuries my chis have sustained from my husky have been purely unintentional. My sibe just plays too rough for my chi girls and they can and have been hurt by him accidentally. I trust my sibe with full run of the house. We also have the two Chihuahuas and two guinea pigs. What I do is crate my two Chihuahuas when I leave the house and my sibe stays loose. My chi girls' crate is nothing like a "jail" either. The chi girls' crate is actually my sibes old crate so it is very spacious for them and I have it lined with 2 fleece blankets on the top and 3 sides and they have 4 fleece blankets inside their crate to lay on, hide under, or do with what they please. The chis love their crate so it works out better in our situation to crate the chihuahuas rather than the husky. _________________ |

| where is Texas are you??? I'm in the southeast area as well and I've had two huskies, and they do perfectly fine in our weather. Like the others said, DO NOT shave him and please keep him inside! I have learned he hard way on not to leave them outside unattended(my first husky was stolen). The others are right about he crate as well. It's for his and others own safety. Maybe we can have a husky play date/meet if you're close enough!! |

| He is very handsome. I know what you mean about not wanting to use a create. I have never had to use one for any dog I have ever had not even for the other 2 huskies I had. But when I got Thor and after he ate 2 mattress pads (1 still in the box) the cushion off the love seat 3 xbox controllers and about 12+ games. It was time to get one. I was lucky enough that the previous owner of Thor caged him so when we got one he was actually happy to see it. He knows when we leave he goes in his cage and actually pulls the door shut. Then we give a treat and he is happy. |

I don't think he ever had time to eat anything. The previous owner was a 17 yr old in high school and rotc the dad was/is in iraq and the mom works alot plus goes out a bit. So no one was really ever home. I think they just took him for a walk when some one was home then back to the cage. I don't think he had any training at all. |

| I always put a stainless steel bowl with fresh water in every time i put my boy in his crate as well, especially during the summer. Just another thing to consider. |

| same here, I keep a fresh bowl of water in his crate when I need to put him in there. stainless bowls as well. also it might be a good idea to put in an old fleece blanket so it's easy on his joints and pressure points. |
