| Is there such a thing? Appa has his 1.25 cups of food eaten by the time I can wash my hands. Is there anything I should worry about with his inhalation of food? |

| Bloat is a common issue in large breeds that inhale their food. You can buy dog food bowls that make the dog slow down when they eat, see link below, or you can place a ball in the bowl so he has to eat around the ball. My willow would inhale her food when I first got her so I started making her sit in a certain spot when I prepare her food and then she has to wait for my hand signal before she can eat. It really helped, now she takes longer than Dakota eating. I also make sure Willow and Dakota eat in different rooms. If you have another dog, which I think I remember you saying you do. It might help to seperate them when they eat. I think Willow thought Dakota was going to steal her food and that's why she ate so fast.

| Eating slower is preferred, like Mindy mentioned bloat is something that can happen as a result of food inhalation. lol
There are some ways to help slow down a dog who inhales food. Slow feed bowls are an option. Another idea is putting a ball in a normal food bowl so that the dog has to work around the ball to eat. And another idea is spreading out kibble on a baking sheet so that they can't swallow huge mouthfuls at a time. _________________ |

| Was he living with other dogs before you got him? Sabaka did the same thing when we first got him and now food sits for hours...
His one cup offered at 10:00am is still there at 3:00... good grief! |

| No other dogs in the house, but there is one at work. Their eating schedules are totally different so they aren't ever at the same time, and we keep them separated during feeding just to be safe.
He WAS eating 6 cups of food 2 times a day, so maybe he's still used that? We'll try and slow him down a bit with the ball trick. What's a good pace?
In his old house there was a cat, but not another dog. |
