| Subject: Still has Diarehea? Thu Jun 16, 2011 10:01 am | |
| So here is the history. When we first got Akira she had a little diarehea. We figured it was due to shipping and the change in her food. (She was flown in from Oklahoma and we live in N. Idaho) After about 5 days it hadn't gotten better and if anything had gotten worse. We took her into the vet and she was diagnosed with hook worms and giardea. The gave her a really strong antibiotic and a wormer, this being after her first appointment with shots and wormer. by the fourth day, nothing had changed so they gave her a probiotic oral gel and special w/d food for intestinal issue. It seemed like it was starting to work but her stool still wasn't as firm as it should be. Once the bag was almost gone, we started transitioning her back to her normal food. TOTW. Well within 2 days, the diarehea was back, just like before, where its literally liquid. Called the vet again and he gave her another round of antibiotic, more w/d food and a powder supplement called fortiflora.. i'm thinking to give her extra protein. She still has diarehea and this is the start of the 3rd day of this round. She is still gaining weight and eating and drinking and has a ton of energy. Could this be food allergies. Even though she is on the special food, we have still been giving her treats and what not. Not sure what else to do, because I would think the parasites would be killed by now. I think we are going to eliminate all treats and goodies and see if that changes anything.. poor girl. Any ideas? And I trust our vet and his diagnoses, I worked with him for several years and know how he handles things |

| It could very well be food intolerances if it's not parasites or worms.
The 'prescription' diets vets carry usually have grain, and a often times Sibes cannot process or tolerate grain, and as a result causes diarreha.
It sounds like TOTW may have something she's not tolerating well, or it could be the 'cooking' process.
Have you tried a bland diet starting with a protein you know she does well on? If not, a good neutral protein would be scrambled or hard boiled eggs. Try starting with eggs and see how she does. If she starts to firm up, after a few days, add in a source of fiber, such as green beans (canned, no salt). If that is getting her in the right direction, and her BMs are firming up, after another few days, try addtion a couple of tablespoons of a different kibble.
This will take time, and trial and error, but take a few days with the bland diet at each step, starting with eggs.
I went through a similar issues with Ginger. I had her TOTW but she was never really firm, and in fact, almost to the point where I could not pick it up. I gave her something that set her off, and after 'resetting' her tummy on hard boiled eggs and carrots, I found she could not tolerate either an ingredient(s) or the 'cooking' process of TOTW Pacific Stream. I went back to eggs and carrots and tried Orijen 6 fish, and she does wonderful on it. I also found that she cannot tolerate chicken in kibble form, but can tolerate chicken if it's freeze dried, dehydrated or raw.
So it'll be finding out what your pup can and cannot tolerate.
Keep us posted!

| My Sebo had hookworms and was very malnourished, 25lbs, when I rescued him from the shelter. Hookworms are very hard to kill and their eggs can live in the soil for a long time, so picking the poo is imperatative to prevent re-infection. Sebo had diarrhea for 9 months after treatment. I would recommend a worm re-check and several of small meals. It takes a lot of time for their system to become normal after an infestation. Oh and probiotics or yougurt to help with intestinal balance and pumpkin may help with the loose stools. |

| Also I live in Oklahoma, where was she shipped from? The reason I ask is Oklahoma is one of the worst puppy mill states and I see a lot of huskies in horrible conditions, just curious. |

| We got her from the sky is the limit ranch. Think I'll try eggs for the first few days. Its just so weird because she eats so well and has so much energy and is gaining a healthy amount of weight. |

| I had the same issue! Kody didn't have worms or giardea so it was so weird that he liquid diarrhea! I followed Claudia and Val's advice and thanks to them he's ok now! We too started with the eggs, then added carrots, and then some raw ground beef. All of this went on for about 2 months until we eventually kept him on The Honest Kitchen Embark for a few months and then added in some raw chicken. Now we give him Orijen 80/20 also and he's ok with it. Anything else sets his tummy off!!! For treats he gets carrots, or these sweet potato (3 ingredient) treats that I found.
Good luck and don't loose hope. You'll figure it out! It's VERY FRUSTRATING..I KNOW!!!!!! I was about to cry many times! |

| Ginger showed no signs of anything being wrong, and her full spectrum fecal test came back all negative. So she could be showing some signs of food intolerances.
Just to give you some reference, Ginger weighs 58 lbs and on her bland diet, she got 3-4 eggs and 1 cup of blanched carrots, 3x a day.
If she does OK on green beans or carrots, you might want to also supplement the eggs with it. Eggs will give her protein, and the veggie will give her fiber to keep her moving and volume to help her feel full. How old is Akira and how much does she weigh?
Keep us posted on how things progress with a bland diet.
Oh the days when I had to boil and peel 24 eggs at a time and buy bags and bags of carrots.... _________________ |

| Akira is 12, almost 13 weeks now. She is Last week when she was at the vet she weighed just about 14.5 pounds. The vet says she looks good, even with all the diarehea. So for her size, how many eggs and carrots and what not should she be getting? |

| Start off with 2 or 3 eggs with maybe about 1/2 cup of either green beans or carrots, 3x a day. If you do carrots, just to let you know, they will come out looking like they went in Cut everything else out. If she still appears to be hungry, give her a little more beans or carrots. If she does well on that I'd keep her there for a few days. (I had Ginger on her bland diet for 5 days). If her BMs are good, then slowly try a different kibble other than TOTW. Start off with a couple of tablespoons. If she does well on a bland diet with a little kibble, after a few days, decrease the bland diet, and increase the kibble. If at any time she goes soft, back off what you just changed and 'reset' her. If the new kibble makes her go soft again, try something else. Go to your local pet store and see if they have trail or sample bags you can try - enough for at least a few days, before you go buy a big bag unless they have a good return policy. If you can find treats that are 2 or 3 ingredients, you can try them. If she goes soft, you'll at least know it's one of the 2 or 3 ingredients she doesn't tolerate. There's a lot of freeze dried or dehydrated treats that 2 or 3 ingredients. They sometimes are a little pricey, but at least you'll be able to tell what she's not tolerating. _________________ |
