Training to ignore other dogs on walks. Empty
PostSubject: Training to ignore other dogs on walks.   Training to ignore other dogs on walks. EmptyTue May 02, 2023 2:01 pm

So I think shes comfortable enough with me now that I could probably reprimand her, and she needs to chill out about other dogs during walks.

I've inferred her response to other dogs is varied, but it's also probably her biggest issue. Supposedly she grew up in a house with several other dogs, but I don't thinks he was exposed to many outside of that.

Other huskies she seems simply interested in and more friendly. I think she wants to just say hello and smell.

Mid-size dogs she tends to be neutral about, her response gets largely dictated by the other dog. Sometimes she can walk by mellow with little response, if the other dog barks or stands on guard she reciprocates and escalates. But shes also stood there calm with mid-size dogs 10 feet or so away that were very calm and mellow themselves, and she remained neutral and calm herself. She might be okay around mid-size dogs already if they are well trained.

Little dogs seem to be roughly the same, but maybe more interest as she thinks they might be a squirrel from a distance. But little dogs bark more, which sets her off.

Large dogs seem to put her on guard, and in some cases attack mode. Usually if they are more than 10 feet away she just watches them very closely. Today there was another big dog in one of her peeing spots that she tried to sprint at from across the street! If there is another big dog I've learned to just go the other way so far.

I've also inferred there is still some aspect of hostility vs stressed out on her side. Sometimes if I get down and put my hand on her, or arm around her, and talk to her, she is relatively calm as another dog goes by, and I think her response to the other dog is mostly a stress response. Other times she does seem to want to be hostile. This seems to be generally with bigger dogs.

Id like her to just remain calm around other dogs in passing.

I've used the "on by" command to cope with other dogs while on leash. Basically, while walking, if I see another dog that will come within our sphere, I shorten the leash, speed up the pace and continue walking while saying "on by." The faster pace and command get his attention back on me and off the other dog.

Treats. You can teach heel command or put in sit stay when encountering other dogs and reward the behavior you are seeking. I have a dog that is super reactive to bikes that I'm currently working on. Since I'm trying to run with him we are working on the "on by" command as Amy mentioned, but when I have all 3 dogs with me the sit method is easier for all involved.

I use sit with squirt followed by focus now i can just use focus. None of that works for me with her if the other dog touches her, so u have to be very aware of how other dogs are behaving.

I dont know if thats hostile or just misguided anxiety. I dont even consider squirt to be hostile, and she kills cats, dogs and other animals.
