| The title pretty much sums it up. We were in the back yard this morning, just about to head inside when a squirrel decided it was safe to come into a yard with two huskies. Luka is usually the one that kills animals in our yard. I've lost count of how many things she has caught. But today Kitty saw it first. It happened so fast. One moment she is by my side and the next she has the squirrel in her mouth! This was the first time Kitty has killed something. Then Luka decided Kitty should share and they were tugging at the poor squirrel. I was finally able to get them to drop it. They would have eaten it if I let them. My little Kitty lost her innocence today. |

| Aww, Kitty is all grown up now! After the last few days, all I can say is good riddance to the squirrels! Evil, conniving rodents. Dakota caught his first bird this morning, not his first catch or kill but it's his first bird. Luckily I got him to drop it and it hopped away...hopefully it's okay. _________________ |

| Yay Kitty! (Look at us cheering and encouraging squirrel kils!)
Ginger tried to catch a moth this morning. I think if I didn't pull her away, she would have caught it.
Storm is kinda funny...he's just skipping along, 'Doh, di, doh, di doh...' and theeeen will perk up when he notices Ginger is in full alert, 'What's that? Whaddaya see, Ginger, huh? Whaddaya see??' LOL!

| Preface with an apology for the long post, and it gets a little graphic, but not too bad, I don't think.
I thought there was another thread on the animals the dogs have eaten, but I've never posted.
Juno and Bleeker got their 3rd rabbit this morning. First one was last May, right after we moved into our new house on a 1.25 acre lot, and big yard. Let the dogs out in the middle of the night and sat by the door to let them back in when they were done with their business. After about 3 minutes, when they hadn't come back in yet, I called them and still nothing. Went out with the flashlight and saw them both lying in the grass, staying completely still and staring at me. Walked up and found a rabbit carcass with head and front legs detached, Bleeker with the body and Juno munching on the head. Had to drag them inside and clean up rabbit leavin's at 3 AM. The wanted out for the rest of the night/morning, not sleeping a bit.
2nd time happened a few days later. Jen let them out for a pre-bed relieving. about 5 seconds later, she screamed that something was getting the dogs! I grabbed the Mag light and ran out ready to bash a coyote or something over the head, but found them playing tug-of-war with a rabbit. No parts were pulled off yet, so the cleanup wasn't bad. We went around and made sure that anywhere the fence wasn't buried well, we buried a cinder block in front of it.
That all worked well until this morning. I woke up at 5:15, let the dogs out and went downstairs to fluff the dryer. Came upstairs and called the dogs in. They hesitated for a split second but came in. We headed back to the bedroom, and I got ready for work. At 6:15 (okay, I might have gotten back in bed for a bit), I fed them, got ready to go to work and let the dogs out to put them in their play pen. The both headed for the middle of the yard, and Bleeker stood over a chew toy. Then I noticed he was starting to nibble at the chew toy. Walked over, and sure enough, another rabbit. No head or front legs, but mostly there, and the head was right next to it. Luckily today was trash day, so the carcass won’t be around.
This all made me smile a little bit. I know it sounds sick, but here’s why: the pups have a great memory and learn from their experiences. They came inside when called this time, knowing I’d take away the rabbit if they stayed out. At least, that’s how I saw it. They also happily stayed inside this time, instead of scratching at the door to be let out. This also makes me wonder if the change to the raw diet has made the rabbit less of a “treat” for them. We feed them raw chicken thighs, legs, breast, and whatever other raw stuff we can get, so once the rabbit was killed, it became just another meal. I could be wrong, but just another thought.
Now I get to stop and get dewormer on the way home again….
Oh, and the rest of the tally: Rabbits – 3 Birds – 2 Mice – 2 …. That we know of….
