Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

Has anyone used meloxicam before? Shadow got some today and im starting it in the am. Talked to my uncle and he doesnt usually use it on big dogs. He does think it will help.

I do find it funny that both me and shadow are on the same meds.

I haven't used it on mine but I think my in-laws had one of their beagles on it for a time after he got done healing from breaking his back. Dog had so many issues I'm not sure they could tell whether it worked or not through all his other oddities and problems.

Im in that "nobody knows" situation with my back. And with the current hip and si pain it would seem the humira isnt working. I hope my dog does not end up like that.

We used Meloxidyl which I think is the generic for Meloxicam. We had Costco price them both out each time before a refill. Not sure why but they weren’t consistently the same cost.

Our vet said this med was hard on other internal organs so it was used only after other pain meds and acupuncture no longer worked. We have friends who used it on their large mixed breed and said it was amazing for 6-8 months. We didn’t have the same experience but it did help.

Im having really mixed feelings about it because for shadow ot has been a miracle drug, for me it does nothing. He is on the same exact pills as me just he takes 1/2 once a day and i can take a whole one twice a day. Also i noticed when i take it twice a day over a period of time i start feeling kidney pain, and renal issues are the #1 issue with meloxicam. Yesterday Shadow was actually running. Its been awhile since he could do that. Poor dog is a medical disaster.

Shadow is currently on 3.75mg meloxicam dasuquin with msm and naturvet all in one. Ive been thinking about thc/cbd combo but not sure how to dose him on top of getting it has turned into a scavenger hunt due to a weather caused hash oil shortage in Colorado.

I have never used it on my dog but I did take it for a few years and it helped me with some arthritic issues. Then I found out that you should not really take it long term due to the fact that it "may" cause heart issues so I stopped taking it. My family has heart disease. This is not from my Dr. but just what I read. When I did take it, it did help me a lot but I am doing well without it and if not for family heart history I would probably keep taking it.

You are correct about NSAIDs and heart disease. Taking and occasional pill low risk, steady diet - nope.
