So 3 years ago when i had a roomate, hit pot plant got hot really bad with knats. In the last 3 days my pot plant and my basil cluster had knats to where it looked like the soil is moving. I put the basil outside hoping to freeze the knats out and covered the soil with saran wrap on the pot plane. Couldnt wrap the basil cluster because it has seedlings. So this am on the pot plant the flys were coming out the drainage holes on the pot at the bottom. Nothing is the same as what roomate used. Different soil. Obviously the pot plant is a huge factor. So what will kill fruitfly/knats and is organic and wont kill my plants. And im not a fan of infesting the house with a different insect to get rid of the fruitflys unless whatever bug it is also eats spiders and sun scorpions.

I usually use hydrogen peroxide for gnats. seems to work better than neem oil. They make organic types of insecticidal soap too. Think it uses castile and olive oil.

So if i was to use hydrogen peroxide would it go in the soil or spray the plant. Ive used neem oil for mites

Yup i think that is it. Gonna figure out the peroxide ratio and also add cinnamon. I have to be very careful because the plant is in the middle of budding. Another month and its gonna get cut down.

I know you don't like the idea but I can't help putting in a word for those predator mites. You'd likely never see them. They are tiny and without a food source elsewhere they are unlikely to travel beyond the dirt they live in. We had a horrid rodent mite infestation that was also biting the larger animals and even me. I went to bed one night with DE powder on my sheets cause the things were actually crawling under my skin like scabies. A doctor confirmed they weren't. They would not have infested anything but rodents if they were not so numerous. Nothing would kill them. I mean absolutely nothing. We applied things like revoulation to all the animals from little caged pets to big. Got creams from the doctor. Spread stuff around the house. Tried to kill all the wild rodents that might be getting inside. Still they were everywhere.

It was reaching the point of professionally fumigating the house despite all our animals and nowhere to go when I ordered some predator mites. This container of dirt that had no visible sign of life arrived. I dumped the cup of dirt on a dish of more damp dirt in the middle of the worst room and left it. Within 2 days the mites were disappearing. Within a week we were all healing and never another sign of the bloody things. I can't imagine the population those predator mites had to multiply to in order to completely eliminate the pest ones from a large 2 story 1800s farmhouse and all it's crevices but all I ever saw of them was possibly some teeny tiny little dots grouped together next to the bathroom sink. They were gone a few hours later. I doubt they'd have showed up anywhere in the house if all I'd had was a potted plant or 2 to treat. After that I would happily live with the nearly invisible predator mites 24/7/365 if I could keep them around between pest infestations. They eliminated the problem with practically no effort, no chemicals, no spreading things around.... Just some dirt shipped in from out of state and our impossible pest problem was solved.

Ive used fly predators before when i ran a horse farm. Ive never even heard of rodent mites, but here rodents carry hantavirus and bubonic plague.

So got rtu neem oil and did that yesterday along with letting the soil dry out some.

And @kaliska i have a ridiculous amount of spiders. Too bad they dont make spider predators.... or is that what having a husband is for

Fly predators are not predator mites at all. Those are actually another, smaller, flying insect and I don't believe they are native while nearly all soil has some form of predatory mites. Predator mites are teeny tiny dirt crawling critters. Technically mites are considered an arachnid. There are already some forms of mites living in your potted soil. Along with other things like springtails. Soil never remains 100% sterile and your plants will suffer more diseases and pest infestations if you try to keep it that way. You just don't see all that stuff without a really good eye and a large population of them or a microscope. If you want to get even more microscopic demodex mites were found to be living on 50% of human adults and majority of dogs. You just can't see them at all. We're talking really tiny stuff here that you already live with to some degree. Nothing like the fly predators you spread on the farm. Predatory mites are so small you can't even feel them if you do get some on your skin and they can't bite or survive on animals. Only dirt so they don't leave the dirt without a reason.

There are several rodent mite species. We had a particularly large, nasty one that was quite visible. It's like having itty bitty spiders crawling over you in the 1,000s and I was covered in red bites. It was the most horrid thing I've ever dealt with and no veterinary, medical professional, or pest company had a solution we hadn't tried beyond filling the whole house in chemicals.

Sadly all my attempts to look into things that kill spiders failed so we're stuck with those. I'm allergic and break out when bit by even the nontoxic varieties.

Spider mites are easy to get rid of. I prefer everclear because its food grade, but alcohol in a spray bottle works wonders. My pot plant is so close to harvest that i have to be super careful, and also i dont have time to order something. The basil plant that got hit i may just put outside, but it did get drenched yesterday.

Oh basil and mint work really well as a natural rodent repellent.
