| Who knew?!!?
"Pet fur is full of nitrogen, one of the two main components that a compost pile needs. (The other is carbon.) While maintaining the perfect ratio of carbon and nitrogen in a compost pile can get tricky, it’s better to have more nitrogen in your pile than not enough. Excess nitrogen just means a stinky pile. If your pile doesn’t have enough nitrogen, however, it will slow down the decomposition process."

| Ive been using dog hair in my container pots for years. They also help retain moisture, and has similar properties to perlite. Tomatoes love it. |

| Does it count toward your greens or your browns in the pile though? Birds don't usually leave mine long. they would like to steal it right off kye when he starts to blow. _________________ |

| We have a magpie that will land on spider grab a clump and fly off. And then last year i caught a chipmunk dragging dog hair into its tunnel. Wildlife is funny. |

Greens. High nitrogen source. I'm taking a zoom gardening course from Cornell and this week was soil. So.. composting. They posted a chart and I was quite surprised to see pet hair. It was in the greens column. I had occasionally put dog/human hair in the compost pile but more a hoped for, but unproven, scavenger deterrent. Browns are predominately carbon sources. My primary browns are newspaper. I have a leftover 104 count dishwasher detergent pac bucket that I use for kitchen scraps. I line it with a double sheet of newspaper folded in to sort of form a bag (I started doing this cause avatars would stick to the bottom and is have to scrape it out with my hands or a convenient stick.) Then I tear the rest of the section into 1"strips and put on the bottom for absorbing any liquids and odor. When I dump the whole mess in the compost pile, automatically has decent "browns to green" ratio. The newspaper, even on the bottom of the bucket, gives great odor control. Does nothing to stop fruit flies, though. That is only August/early September thankfully sand requires a soda bottle with a little wine or orange juice on the bottom. |
