Any one surfer with the “husky tail” Apollo’s tail is doing my head in he loves the mud and I just can’t keep he’s tail clean!!!!! How do you guys deal with this as I am washing him nearly every day

He has a squirt tail. Lol. We dont have a whole lot of mud but yesterday the riverbank was really muddy and squirt got covered.

Horse show trick that may work on his tail. Rub cornstarch in before he gets muddy. You will still have to wipe the hair but it keeps the mud from sticking to the hair. It worked with clydesdales anyway. Also mixing olive oil and cornstarch and rubbing the mix in is great for skin issues related to moisture.

I dont know how apollo would feel about it but i have seen horse tail bags put over dogs tails. Although an umbrella bag would also do the same thing. It would depend on how much he minds something on his tail

I’ll give the cornstarch and Olive oil a go! He would hate that, he can barely stand me brushing he’s tail let alone having something stuck to it! Would be funny to watch him running round the field like a mad dog trying to get it of bless him

Ami has the same tail. And, as a wooly, his whole undercarriage and back of legs have the same plume of fur. Spring here is always major mud season. I rarely bathe Ami. Exceptions are possum poop facials and eau de skunk spray, both of which call for baking soda/peroxide/fish soap dogs treatment For routine mud, I towel off the excess moisture than confine him to either the laundry room or back hall covered with his blanket and towels. He tends to clean himself up and as he dries, the mud turns to dust and falls off onto the towels. The towels are shaken and thrown in the wash ( we have quite the wardrobe of old towels/flannel sheets/moving blankets for dogs.) By then, Ami is usually quite clean. If stinky, a shake of baby powder ( the cornstarch one, NOT talc!!!) Rubbed into his fur and brushed out 10 minutes later generally take care of things.

Thanks I’ll give that ago! Storm is so much better with the short fur and she’s not to fussed on the mud, but Apollo loves it!! And he’s favourite at the minute is going to our horse paddock and rolling in the churned mud!! Apollo is the same I think he is classed as a woolly?? He’s whole tail and he’s bum and belly are always covered in mud!

He may have partial wooly gene expression but I don't see the usual "tells" except for maybe a bit of ear tufting. And he doesn't appear to have leg "feathers."

Ami also has a pronounced ruff, sort of a lions mane on his chest and definite tufting about the ears. The only close to normal coat is his back.

Squirt is going to end up shaved i think. She is all matted where her collar goes and wont let me brush it. I have to trim her back legs and clean up her underside or she gets dreadlocks. Also has the ear and armpit tufts. Shes so pretty when shes brushed but ahe hates it.

@liv_skye try to find a remedy for hotspring wet dog smell. Its like rotten eggs and wet dog combined. Squirt, her bedroom, and the jeep all smell like that from yesterday. She just loves the hotsprings so much.

Ami is not getting shaved but I am constantly using scissors to snip off dreadlocks the form on his legs. One not of heavy wet snow and he'll have a whole new crop. Which is why I usually trim his front and back legs, on winter. Right now I'm working on elbows.
