Exercise needs now at 3 years? Empty
PostSubject: Exercise needs now at 3 years?   Exercise needs now at 3 years? EmptyMon May 04, 2020 6:17 pm

Lachlan just turned 3. Until recently he needed at least one good exercise session per day or he would be obnoxious at night and would settle down at bed time. Typically either my wife or I would take him on our 3.5-5 mile run during which he would "charge it" and if anything we'd have to work with him not to run ahead and put tension on the leash.

Lately he's more likely to lag back and tension the leash behind us. Sometimes he just flat stops.

So is it normal for a husky to not need/want as much exercise as soon as age 3? He seems healthy and happy in every other way and on days we don't run him he's less likely to be annoying at night than he used to be.

This does seem a bit odd my husky Skye need 2-3 mile walk twice a day to get her energy out, and as she got older she wanted more walks and exercise.
Is he eating properly? Is he getting out of breath quickly? It might be a health issue, maybe talk to your vets?

Squirt could outdo the Energizer bunny and she will be 8 in September. Towards the end of last fall.she stopped trying to drag me after the first hour but making her swim upriver probably helped. All of mine are starting to slow down and part of it is age and part is they are couch potatoes.

Spider gets the night time zoomies/anxiety.

Eating normally for him, 2.5 cups 1X day around 6pm.
I wouldn't say he gets out of breath easy or different than normal.

It's not uncommon to see less distance or less vigorous exercise keeping them contented as they age. Between 3-5 is the typical age you will see some slow downs. Most won't literally slow down though, it just starts taking less to satisfy the nut inside them. If he is laying down on a walk though it might be worth having a vet check. He could be developing early arthritis or have hip or back issues that are starting to flare up. I have two dogs with hip issues. One can go 8 miles and will just sit down and we will have to wait 15 minutes on the dot before we can continue. The other starts to lag on warm days and will lay down some when we get over 3 miles. My boy that tends to lay down on walks more has bad hip dysplasia and is a larger build dog. He's over 27 inches at the shoulder and 80+ pounds (without being overweight), so his body just naturally fatigues because he's so oversized for the breed. I don't recall Lachlan being a large framed dog.
