| Subject: 2nd Dog Questions Mon Nov 25, 2019 10:02 pm | |
| I had a few questions I think people here would be best suited to answer! My girlfriend and I have a Siberian female, going on 2 years old, who we adore. She is very spoiled with 1 exception - due to a change in work schedules, she is not alone 4 days a week for about 6 hours 2 of those 4 days we will be having a dog walker stop by for an hour or two, but we want to get a second dog to keep her company (we've wanted one for a while, but given this recent change we agreed it's a good idea to do so sooner rather than later). A second husky might not be the answer though as our space is small. So we were looking at getting an Alaskan Klee Kai. I wanted to know if anyone here has experience with them and how the seem to pair with huskies. We want a dog that can play with our girl and match her energy levels when doing so, but won't be as big and all as our friends with 2 huskies and a small space said they get at it with each other due to the lack of room for both. Is this something common? Would a 2nd husky be best? Is a Klee Kai a good idea? Is there another breed to consider? We also were looking at the Japanese Spitz. Thanks! |

| Personal opinion coming atcha! The Klee Kai was bred in the US of A in the very late 20th century so we're looking at only a few generations of "pure bred" line. it's going to take a longer time than that for their stable disposition to show. What I've heard so far is that they aren't stable, like many small dogs they often have a "doberman attitude." So, with that out of my system ...
Like many others here, I have a few dogs ... two Siberians and one Alaskan Husky and I live in a house trailer so upon occasion chaos rules. What I find interesting is that there is seldom any damage done while they're running from one room to another and trying to see who can eat whom in the process. While I've reached the age that I won't be thinking about getting another if my eldest passes over I think that the best match for any Husky is another Husky.
The Spitz, again from what I've seen and read, tend to be a one person dog ... there may be others around but it's with the human they interact mostly. And I stand corrected as DogZone says that the Japanese Spitz is quite good at fitting into a family of humans, dogs and other animals (I would question that!)
Two of my three are invariably crated if I have to leave the house for more than a few minutes and crate training any pair of dogs, for me, would be a prerequisite. I really don't appreciate coming home to a house that's been 'destroyed' - garbage strewn about, beds thoroughly messed (and on the floor?) And there's always the caveat that the absolute safest place for a dog alone (or two or more dogs left alone) is in a crate, there's none of the destruction that an anxious dog can display nor are they apt to go chewing a cable that may kill them. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| So most wolfdogs are a little higher energy then a typical sibe, and splinter can outlast spider playing. Splinter is a parsons terrier/schnauzer/poodle mix. I think something like a jack Russell or really any terrier can probably keep up amd and outdo your husky. I have 4 dogs the girls are both husky mixes and the boys well there is splinter and then shadow my blind german shepherd. My house is almost 1100sqft and the dogs are not allowed up im the loft. Sometimes its a very crazy verson of organized chaos. And it always amazes me that hardly anything ever gets broken and no one gets hurt.
On a side note of your in or near Colorado one of the rescues has a terrier husky mix. |

| I personally would be hesitant to leave two dogs so variant in size home alone to play. For the first while whatever you get I wouldn't leave them home alone uncrated. Huskies play rough so smaller dogs can sometimes be intimidated and get their feathers ruffled or just get hurt by them depending on the dog. As for the dogs that get into it, that is more than likely related to their own relationship with each other rather than just because they don't have space. Some dogs will get into it regardless of how much space they have, especially if you have two females in a household. As long as they can both have a spot to lay in then it largely comes down to the personality and how territorial the individual dogs are. I have 3 and they will sometimes bump into the coffee table when playing but I've only had them knock one cup over and that was enough to teach me to put the cup on the taller side table rather than the coffee table and it was never a problem again. A second dog isn't a replacement for structured walks and if you are keeping up with that still then the play sessions will be less hazardous. _________________ |

| I dont leave spider and splinter home alone, they will eat the house. They do get left in the truck alone together. Squirt and shadow used to stay home together until the one day i came home and shadow was upset and squirt was missing. There was a german shepherd sized hole in the wall. I consider the size difference similar to the spider/splinter size difference, shadow has almost 60 lbs on squirt and spider is about 50 lbs bigger then splinter. A trend here is to have a pitbull and a chihuahua.
And yes once you try and fail to get the bongwater smell out of the carpet you learn not to put things like that on coffee tables. Its one of those dog training their human things |
