Whipworms, Hookworms, and more Diarrhea Empty
PostSubject: Whipworms, Hookworms, and more Diarrhea   Whipworms, Hookworms, and more Diarrhea EmptyMon Nov 25, 2019 10:30 am

Archer has a had soft stool problem pretty much since we got him. His first fecal was negative so per normal procedure he did not have another when he got his last set of shots. Well he had diarrhea in his crate twice in a week plus quite a few times outside so I took him in and he has whipworms and hook worms and was put on a round of Panacur last Monday (11/18). Well his stool firmed almost immediately. Now it's back to diarrhea this morning, in his crate. My vet is closed all week because of Thanksgiving. He's due for another fecal next Monday (12/2).

My question is should just wait and see if it was a one time thing? Maybe give him some pumpkin or yogurt? See if there's anything at our local feed store? Or should I take him to the emergency vet?

I have looked at other posts and had him on an egg and green beans diet but it only solved the problem for a couple of days which is when I decided to go to the vet to make sure it wasn't something else causing it. I really just need to know if anyone thinks it's serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency vet or if I can just keep an eye on him make sure he's getting plenty of water and maybe add a probiotic until he goes to the vet again.

Also he's almost 5 months old and weighs about 23 pounds. The vet said he was very healthy other than the worms and he wasn't dehydrated or anything. Nikita has whipworms also and got a round of Panacur but has never had any sort of loose stool. Not even after eating a mole...

With a few exceptions (like heartworms) worms are seldom critical (and even in the case of heartworms, it's a long time)

Well, shoot that didn't make a lot of sense, sorry. What I was trying to say is there's generally nothing emergent about a case of worms. Gross - definitely; an emergency - probably not.

Your vet said that he's in good health so I'd wait till you next regular appointment. Of course, watch for excessive diarrhea that might cause him to be dehydrated and make sure he's eating normally / regularly.

Do you think yogurt or something like it might help? Just in case he's had them and his gut Flora is messed up now? Or would the Panacur have solved that?

If his gut's messed up from the worms (and the cure?) I seriously doubt that the panacur is going to help - more likely to aggravate the situation.

A dose of good yogurt might help, but until the worms get taken care of I'd think almost anything is going to be temporary.

That's what I figured. Just want something to firm up the stools to make them easier to pick up so they don't reinfect themselves.
