| Hi all my name is Vinnie and I have been given a 5 year old husky named Shadow I have not had any experience with this breed of dog but I have grown up with other large dogs So as you can imagine I am going to need all the help I can get if that is ok with you guys. So first of all he seems to be in very good health ( just waiting to be vet checked ) He is eating well He loves his walks and play time with the family My only major concern is that he wants to eat my macaw parrot. So really my first important question is to do with his food and what I really need to know is what is the best food to feed him as his previous owner had him on Tesco dog meat but for obvious reason I would like to be feeding him a better diet as you can well imagine Many thanks for your time and help on this for me. |

| What you feed him won't change his desire to eat your Macaw. That is just something you are going to have to navigate keeping them separated and your Macaw in a secure location and cage. Huskies have a very high prey drive. In the dog world the general consensus is that the "best" food to feed is a raw diet, which is what your dog's trying to do for himself with your bird. lol. Raw can be time consuming and sometimes expensive and you must do it right or you run the risk of really hurting your dog, so if you go the route of raw you must do your homework. I feed partial raw. The safest easiest way to go raw is to do a pre-made or do a premix like Sojos or Grandma Lucy if available. Some dogs don't do well on raw only though and that's okay.
When choosing a food you need to ask yourself what your exercise level is, what is your budget, and does your dog have any intolerances? Super high protein foods are better designed for dogs that do a lot of work or you could run into weight control issues. It's better to swap to a lower calorie/lower protein food than it is to just feed less when dogs start putting weight on with a food or you run the risk of them not getting all the nutrients they need. I rotate between Zignature Multi-protein and Go! Solutions Carnivore. Since his old food was Tesco and I don't believe we have those around here, I'm not sure what brands you have access to. When I am food shopping for a dry kibble my checklist looks a bit like this: Protein over 30%, meat/meat by-product/meat meal as your top 3 ingredients before moving into fillers and binders, and then I adjust for allergies/intolerances. My dogs can't have chicken or potato.
Canned dog food is a whole different ball game than dry kibble. Tesco doesn't disclose enough of their ingredient list to really know how good their canned dog food is but moisture content additions to a dog's diet is good for them and canned food that is meat and by-product heavy isn't necessarily bad. _________________ |
