Looks like the nail got busted at the base. I've had this happen to several dogs. I usually cut the dew claw as short as I can to prevent snagging and just wait it out. It will grow out and eventually fall off or get long enough you can finish cutting it the rest of the way. Being a dew claw as long as it's not snagging on stuff it's not that big of a deal and tends to not really bother them. She may chew it off herself after a bit. If it was a main toenail then you would be looking at a vet visit to finish removing it if you couldn't get it out yourself. We've had to do that too. Main nails are not fun to deal with then broken.

Weird Nail sidenote:
My husband ripped his entire toenail off in the ocean at the beach one summer. We were all freaking out and I was like, "Should I bring you to the E.R!" He was like, "No!!" So the nail just slowly grew back after a few months. Apparently it didn't hurt.

I know dogs have the "quicks" in their nails though, so that's why I'm puzzled!

Yup whole nail gone and weirdly no blood and it didnt really bother her. I called my uncle at 2am his time about it and said if its not bothering her and doesnt get swollen or infected it will eventually break off and grow back. He chalked up the lack of pain to her mix.

Dew claws do not have the level of blood flow to them that other nails have. They are mostly attached through cartilage. While they can bleed they are unlikely to, especially very long after the trauma to them. It might have had a tiny bit of blood right after the break happened but it would have cased quickly as she licked it and worked the nail off. The main nails do bleed if they get ripped out or busted deep. We've had hunting dogs who have ripped nails every year and they would bleed and hurt because there's also just more pressure on them with walking, along with more blood flow.

Hmm, thanks, interesting about the dew claws!

My current dog's nails are white and I can clearly see his pink quick in there, which makes it easier for nail care. My Great Dane had black nails and I used to get her quick every once in a while (ouch) so I know it hurts, poor girl!

I dremel all my dog's nails. One dog has black nails as well. The dremel has made life much easier. No more quick issues and if you need to push the quick back on a dog that was allowed to get out of control it is much easier to do with the dremel as you can sand the nail back more often.
