Hello, I’m currently looking to buy another Husky to keep my 3 year old company. I’m trying to find a reputable breeder here in North Carolina. I looked at the SHCA website and it seems pretty outdated and I haven’t been able to get a reply from any of the breeders listed there. The only breeder I found is Husky palace. They have two locations one in NC and one in SC. This will be the first time I’ll be buying a puppy from a reputable breeder. Any recommendations? Would someone mind perhaps looking st the husky palace website and telling me what they think of the breeders?

If the Husky Palace is run by the same people in both places, these reviews on Yelp will tell you a lot more personally than I could.

In a quick look around their website, I noticed that

• they breed and sell multiple breeds of dogs (Siberian Huskies, Klee Kai and Doberman Pincher) I'd normally suggest that you stick with a breeder who works with one breed - they are normally working for the betterment of that breed.
  
• they actively breed and advertise wooly Siberian Huskies. As far as Siberians go, being a wooly is a fault in the ring. They are also harder to maintain - Huskies have enough hair, you don't need more
  
• the don't work their Huskies. A good breeder will show or run (or both!) their dogs. You want to buy from someone who has a proven record of good quality (excellence!)
  

Some things I did see that I like is that they show the pedigree of their breeding dogs, many BYB don't; they also don't have a litter being born every time a female comes in heat. At the moment (08/25/19) they appear to only have one upcoming litter in Anderson, SC.

Overall, they don't appear to be the worst of the breeders I've seen but breeding exclusively woolies doesn't put them anywhere near the top of my (non-existent) list.

Thank you for the reply. I just saw the reviews on Yelp. It’s been a pain finding a breeder around the area. My current husky, I adopted when he was 2 years old hence why I’m looking for a pup this time around for a change.

I did notice that they include a pedigree of both parents, although they don’t do OFA certifications and their health guarantee are only for a year. I don’t want a wooly husky either. I was looking into getting their Agouti female, but definitely want to stay from BYB.

Here we have lots of husky rescues some even have puppies sometimes. One in particular only deals with purebred puppymill dogs. After shadow i will probably only go through rescues unless i get another wolfdog.

@LostManiac those were two good referrals!  Do you have a site with a lost you go to or was that just a Google search?

When i was at the wolfdog rescue they got a few huskies that were not huskies that were sent up to Colorado. So combo of google and recognizing the names. The sad fact is alot of wilfdogs end up at husky rescues and alot of Huskies end up at wolfdog sanctuaries. 2 near me actually do both. One does wolfdogs wolves and dogs and one takes all exotic dogs and primative and northern breeds

@aljones and when i mean near me arc is 80ish miles and the other one is about 150ish miles. Id like to go more but gas and time...

When contacting breeders from the SHCA directory, which is updated annually, make sure they don't have puppy questionnaires or introduction forms to fill out vs a blast email- I typically do not reply to emails simply stating 'looking for and how much' beyond re-directing to my questionnaire....not saying that's what you did but it can be a bit of a turn off. Also, most of the breeders are active with their dogs and may not be readily available to respond quickly. Often litters are pre-spoken for and future plans may be undetermined so there may not be much of a rush to respond with little to say. Some simply won't respond to anyone outside of their circle. Sad but fact.

Regardless you want to take care to research breeders thoroughly. Not every good breeder is on the SHCA page, not every SHCA breeder is good (though a lot less likely to find major red flags) - Make sure the breeder is breeding to preserve the breed not just enhance their bank accounts. There should be a goal behind the breeding that is beyond financial gain or because puppies are cute or because the dogs are capable of making puppies. Make sure the parent dogs are properly health tested! There are but 2 required tests to qualify for CHIC in Siberians, Hips and Eyes. Many reputable breeders now also do thyroid testing as well though not required thyroid is climbing in problematic concern in the breed. Health testing results should be transparent, but if not ask, if not provided or replies dodged...run. Ideally the breeder should be active in the breed to some capacity- be it conformation, harness sports, etc. The breeder should not be breeding 'rare' colors, glaring faults, incorrect coat, or for 'blue eyes' *healthy eyes are far more important than any color*

I can give you the name of a breeder in North Carolina that I’d personally recommend you stay away from, as all 3 of mine I bought from them, died early deaths from seizures related to idiopathic epilepsy.

@huskymom09 since you know alot about breed standards i have some questions about a very specific fault. Squirt is a mix and i know her cross the Indian dogs tend to be short haired and well the husky half we all know but in breed standards it mentioned excessive tail plumage. Squirt has hair on her tail that makes me think of a shitzu its like over a foot long. Indian dog doesnt explain it but is that what they mean by excessive plumage. She also has that on her back legs

The original breeder retired, after breeding Huskies for 50 years. She sold her breeding program to someone else who continues to breed Huskies with many having the DNA of the father of my three I had. I did inform her I had three Huskies die of seizures, who the father was, etc. and she expressed her sympathy...and that was it.
