So, I went to brush my husky today and to use a rinse-less shampoo on him only to realize that for the first time ever he has crazy dandruff. Any ideas on why and on how to address this?

The only time I've used a rinseless shampoos was when I had a spaniel who got hot spots just above her tail. She liked to go play in the bayou and came home muddy & smelly, The vet thought that my constant washing of her after these 'play trips' were exacerbating the hot spots and recommended a 'dry shampoo' - it didn't do anything good for the hot spots and anytime she'd shake it looked like a snow storm.

My thought at the time was that either the shampoo was leaving some residue behind that she was shaking off or that there was a residue that aggravated the tendency of spaniels to have dandruff. You pays your money and takes your choice on that.

I've been down here on the desert for more than 8 years and my dogs don't get bathed - they don't need it. Many of our dogs don't get more than the sporadic bath - in general they don't need one, dirt generally just falls off. 'Course, rolling in some things mean they need a bath now!

My gsd has dandruff and like al im in the desert my dogs only get a bath if its absolutely necessary. Ive been messaging coconut oil into his coat. It seems to help and makes him really shiny and handsome. Come to think about it the closest thing shadow has had to a bath was after he went swimming i shampooed him up then took him back swimming.

Spider gets dandruff when she blows her coat and the vet says its common when hair comes off in clumps.

Is this the first time using a dry shampoo? If so, then more than likely it's the shampoo coming off. Dry shampoos (most anyway) function by going on, absorbing extra oil and grime in the hair, and brushing out. You would need to observe what is coming off to decide if it's shampoo or actual dandruff. It could also be seasonal allergies. This has been a strange year for weather a bit. Lot of moisture and humidity.

For now I would address by brushing often to loosen it all up and move it and any extra loose hair along. Stop using the shampoo to see if that makes a change. If it doesn't you may look at adding some fish oil/vitamin E to the diet and massaging coconut oil in as was mentioned above.
