Feeding my Husky home made meals Empty
PostSubject: Feeding my Husky home made meals   Feeding my Husky home made meals EmptyTue Aug 20, 2019 2:27 pm

I recently posted on this forum, about my dog Cheyenne, a year+ old Husky, who has been having trouble with really soft stools and diarrhea. Eventually I found a grain free dog food, that although really seems to work. it's awfully expensive.

We've been considering switching to something home made. I've heard of folks feeding their dogs homemade meals, consisting of chicken or the like ? Was wondering if anyone here does that, or if anyone has any suggestions, for going this route. Like what else should be included.

A bunch of other stuff must be included. I do diy raw. You have to start with deciding whether you want to go the BARF route or the PMR route (fruits and veggies vs. not). Then decide if you want to go raw or if you want to do cooking. Cooking destroys nutrients so there's a little more calculation that goes into home cooking.

When doing diy you have to balance muscle meat, organ meat, and bone content. Within that you have to balance red meat to white meat and, liver to other organs. I do the 80/10/5/5. 80% muscle meat (over half of that percentage is red meat), 10% bone for calcium (there are calcium powders if your dog isn't trustworthy with bones), 5% must be liver, and 5% other organ like kidney.

If you are doing a BARF model then you must factor in the veggies which extends your calculations.
