| I do live in a rural area so I suppose compared to a lot of others in the UK I often am around things that those may only be around occasionally. My dog rolls in poop not nice it's fox, badger, deer never another dogs but he is almost smiling as he's on his back in it. God knows how he sniffs it out but when he does he's flat on his back in it. It happens a couple of times a week and he loves it. I don't know why they do this but wondered why he does is all the time. Another thing which is disgusting is he can sniff anything dead out from a long distance then he's rolling in the dead animal he will then try to eat it or bury it. I'm glad he knows the drop command as only tonight he was in the bushes and came out with some big bone of an animal that was still juicy and fleshy and thankfully after rolling in it he dropped it when he was told. Anyone elses husky like this. I read this behaviour goes back to wolves. I've got other dogs different breeds and only once has one my dogs ever rolled in poop. None bury things. My cat brought home a dead mouse , my husky then picked it up and buried it LOL. It's a regular thing. |

| My Husky doesnt really want anything to do with poop, hers or anyone elses so far but my sisters Dachshunds roll around in it like its a sleeping bag. found this online but i couldnt tell you if its true or not but have heard it before...
Many believe it's instinctual behavior, harkening back to the days when your dog's wild ancestors would mask their scent to help them sneak up on their prey. Wolves, for example, have been observed rolling in animal carcasses or the droppings of plant-eating animals, to cover up their own smell during the hunt. |

| Both my girls do that with different things. Spider..and its gross will roll wherever my husbands colostomy bag breaks and also on wet towels bit the worst was when squirt rolled on a dead skunk. Squirt rolls on anything gross or stinky i guess its good she likes baths and swimming
The hunting aspect seems on point. Its amazing what i can sneak up on when im on a horse |

| Ami loves a good possum poop facial whenever he can get it. All the dogs find cat poop a delicacy. As for eating? Ami the run of 4+ acres in invisible fence. Rural. Wooded. He frequently catches himself a critter for dessert in the evening. Currently working on a large bird. I think. Unless it's another possum. Check this thread: https://www.itsahuskything.com/t18250-wtf-w-t-f#263965Turns out was a possum, not a skunk. |

| My dog has caught things but I taught him to let go and drop. I've took weasels, stoats and moles off him. Last year it was hedgehogs. I got 7 off him in one week alone. The only thing he's ever killed are birds which have died of shock in his mouth. He's more into the catch rather than the kill. |

| Ami has been thoroughly enjoying his latest kill. After he eats his dinner, he goes out, running with purpose to his last "freezer" location, pulls out his "dessert," brings it down to the front of the house, gnaws on it a while, puts it back in the "freezer" and takes a long nap. Aside from the need to worm him regularly, and the "yuck" aspect of it all, we don't really mind - he's not chasing the neighbor's livestock and he's keeping the critters under control on the property. Which was a huge part of the decision to get a dog in the first place. For over 25 years, we've been planting trees, perennials, vegetables, fruit trees - almost all of it going to feed deer, rabbits, woodchucks, voles, you name it. Once Ami made his presence known, the critters have found more salubrious grounds to inhabit. I now have a vegetable garden that actually produces, I have peach trees going into their 4th season, my rhododendrons and yews actually need to be pruned!
But - these "dessert" are NOT helping me keep his weight down!!! |
