| Hello, I’m a first time husky owner and have noticed in the last 5 weeks my puppy started to eat noticeably more. She’s putting on weight but still healthy looking. Is this a growth thing or the onset of cold weather here in New England? Any ideas would be great debating if I need a vet check. Cheers! Doug |

| Hmmm... okay, my read is that she's about 14 months old, so she should be "full grown" (barring filling out - she should be going from lanky to, excuse me, husky)
You're going to have to define a few things for me: "overeating" how much of what are you feeding her? If she's been happy at a cup of kibble a day and has decided she wants two, well, that's about normal.
Also: "healthy looking" does she retain her sveldt appearance or is she putting on some gut? Some owners think a dog has to retain the "rolly polly puppy" image to be healthy (which is definitely not true).
Unless she's been neutered, she should be approaching her second heat - how'd she act during her first one?
ETA: Okay, I didn't read your heading, I went back to read your previous messages .... sorry. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| She is fixed and by no means extra weight in a bad way still very sleak visible hips no gut etc. she never had that rolly polly look. We exercise heavy 5-8 miles 2 times a week daily 1 hour of open running. she use to eat probably 1 1/2 cups a day and graze on the second half of the second cup. She’s comfortably eating 3 now and I bet if I put down another she’d eat it. |

| Could just be all the exercise she's been getting is making her eat more. If she laid around and did next to nothing, she probly would eat less/skip a meal or two |

| Okay Doug that all sounds good. You really seem to be doing the right things with her. Last question, has anything else changed?
For example, I had two dogs, an older Sibe and an equivalent aged (but puppyish personality) Alaskan. I was free feeding the Alaskan who'd eat some of his food and graze a lot; the Sibe generally left his food alone but she was being fed about 2 cups a day and on occasion she'd snack on his meal. I added a second Sibe (and all of mine are within a year or so of each other, I think) and he started gulping his food and would eat anything extra that I might give him.
I'm wondering if you might have a new girlfriend? Moved from one place to another? Have you changed brands of dog food?
It's unusual, in my experience to change their eating habits without some influence. I think most of us are feeding about 2 cups a day and I'd think a dog who was getting three without any change in exercise would probably be putting on weight.
It might be worth considering running her past your vet just for a quick general exam..... _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford .
