Hi all,
Figured I'd share our current battle with
diarrhea (misery loves company and all...) and an epiphany about securing the dog food container.
For no apparent reason, the huskies got
diarrhea.
Thought it might be the food we just purchased, but we've used that food many times before and Ginger, the Aussie, had no issues. Since they all eat the same food, we ruled that out. Probably ate something weird during a walk. I have to get better at watching them more closely and preventing them from eating horse poop, bugs etc.
From my research, as long as the dog is otherwise fine,
diarrhea is just one of those things that has to run it's course. It's also generally suggested to not feed your dog for 12-24 hours to give their system a break. Boiled, boneless chicken and cooked rice makes a good bland diet to start to feed after that fasting period, so that is what we did. Also added some canned pumpkin (NOT the pie filling. Be sure to use 100% pure pumpkin).
After a day or so, Mika was starting to get better. Max was getting worse. Was even vomiting off and on. He was also drinking a ton of water. Started to get a bit worried but he seemed ok otherwise. Slept with the dogs in our office and was up every hour taking him out. Hmmm... something wasn't working. Then I remembered seeing him by the food container in the garage.
The night before I had forgot to lock his crate - realizing this when he came to greet me by the door in the garage. Didn't think too much of it. He then went over to the dog food container, popped up the lid and started eating. Goofy dog...
It was at that point a light bulb went on in my head and I checked our security cameras. Turns out, when he got out of his crate, he walked around the garage and then straight to the dog food and popped open the lid.
Using the time counter on the camera, he had his face in that dog food for
5 straight minutes !! Figure he eats a cup of food in about 20 seconds, I can only imagine how much food he ate. No wonder he couldn't stop pooping!!
Anyhoo... didn't feed him anything after breakfast yesterday and he stayed asleep all night (phew...).
More chicken, rice and pumpkin this morning and so far so good. Although they haven't pooped yet, there also is no
diarrhea. I'll take what I can get for now.
