What's up guys!

I brought home my puppy exactly a week ago, he is 10 weeks old as of today, and I realized I haven't trained him efficiently, or taught him anything, besides sit. I am going kinda insane realizing I have wasted a whole week that could have been efficient training time. I read online that each week for a puppy is crucial and it's a prime to for learning and that I should not let it go to waste, plus I've see so many dogs trained by 10 weeks, doing many things.

The problem is my dog is literally either very sleepy and thus sleeping or have too much energy and just wants to run around. He is never interested when I try to train him.

Any advice is appreciated!

There are many things that are easier to teach to a young pup, but the things you want to spend time on are those that don't take much time - puppies seem to have a limited amount of time they'll spend on any one thing. There's too much that's new and interesting to spend time sitting!

On the other hand, you haven't really lost any ground ... dogs can learn from the time they're puppies till ... yeh, well "then." Some people have puppies who are *very* people centric - they're lucky! Other puppies just seem to recognize that you give them food and maybe some play time but otherwise ... ech!

I have a favourite line that goes something like this "Train your puppy *NOW* to be the dog you want it to become." Meaning things like getting on furniture - if you don't want him on the couch as a dog, don't encourage him to "love on you" on the couch now. Some people don't mind their dog grabbing their hands when they want attention, others object vigorously - you have to decide what you want your dog to be and start training for that now.

I haven't done puppies in years but when I did, memory tells me that a lot of my time was spent in training them to *not* do things I didn't want them doing. Peeing on the floor for example ...

Just relax and train as you can, he'll adapt to your schedule and as he grows up will probably become more interested in you as the master rather than just the provider of the food.

Anything can be taught at anytime. It's just easier to get them started as soon as you get them so that you aren't having to break bad habits you've allowed them to get. Start with the major things like potty training. Those things that are essential to living. Obviously being able to sit on command often won't make or break a puppy but a pup that jumps on you constantly, can't walk on leash, and still pees in the house can make your life miserable and the sooner you start those the better, but at no point in a dog's life is it "too late" and you've completely missed your window of opportunity.

Got my rescue shepsky at age 5, and since then he has learned Sit, Down, informal onleash Heel, Recall (to my whistle), get in the car, wait for leash on/leash off, how to walk on a loose leash, how to pass other dogs, how to stay home alone, etc etc.

If my creaky middle-aged guy can learn this stuff...you definitely should not worry that you've missed your pup's learning period!

I think that puppies basically need to learn 1. Pottying outside! 2. don't be scared & weird around other dogs and people (i.e. Socialization) 3. Come when you call 4. How to walk around on a leash without acting nuts

I would start with that, and you can work gradually towards other formal commands whenever you want! Dog training schools often have Puppy Classes...just for socializing/training your puppy...

The things already said are great advice, I just have one thing to add.

Every dog is different, some pups have the drive to focus and work at a young age, but most do not! Don't let social media make you stress out about not doing enough, remember they are probably the outliers not the standard.
