| My mother will be getting a back surgery and will be incapacitated (unable to take care of our husky) and my father works 45 minutes away. We currently do not have the ability to pay for three months worth of doggy day care. She is about 5 months old. Is rehoming her our only option? Or is there a relatively afforable option for us? Please any advice or ideas would be of immense help! |

| Let's see, your mom's gonna be out of commission for a while; your dad isn't home much; I think that leaves you ...
You say that she's "my dog" - somewhere, I'm guessing about 5 months ago - you committed to be her furever home - and young man (or at least I'm guessing Landon is a man) now's the time to prove what you're made of.
At 16 I'm guessing that you spend a good part of your day in school (hopefully) so she's going to have to be crated while you're at school - since mom really isn't going to be able to do much more than maybe feed her, depending on what the back surgery is. That means that before school you're going to have to make time to get her out for a little exercise and then after school you're going to have to make time to take her to a park (someplace where you and she can really run and get some exercise.)
Bringing a dog into your family is a lot like bringing a child into it. You've told her that you'll love her, take care of her for however long she's with you. Oh, granted a bad parent can put their children out for adoption but that's something that's really frowned on.
You may get other responses - but as the saying goes, "Boy, it's time to man up."
If you all do agree that rehoming her is going to be for the best, give us a clue - I live in Texas and have a full house, but even if I didn't and you're in London, for example, I couldn't help. Give us a little more to go on than "Help!"
Huskies are great dogs, that's why people adopt them; people who don't know what they're getting into find they don't have the time and love (or whatever) for the dog so they put it into a shelter (dog pound) - where the chances are real good that she'll be killed since they have more dogs than people to adopt them. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

Thank you for the adivce, but I think you got the wrong idea from how I described our situation. We love her with all our heart and we would never WANT to give her up. We are not first time dog owners (although we are first time husky owners) and we were definitely prepared for the chaos that raising a husky can be. But this event which happened with my mom was completely unexpected. The plan before is that my mom would take care of her while Im at school, and I do the other half once Im home. Right now it is just terrible timing because my schedule is packed with morning classes starting at 6am and practices that dont end till 6pm. We have truly ran every scenario and we just want to find an option for Maya’s care that is afforable (as we wont be able to pay for it otherwise). Rehoming is our last resort but we would rather rehome her to a place that has the ability to give her the full care she needs rather than keep her and not give her enough attention. |

| For the most part a many of our dogs here live in working households. I currently work an hour and fifteen minutes from home (that's one way. I work 8 hours and spend 2.5 hours on the road). My dogs still get taken care of. they still get their meals, they still get their walks, they still get their attention. You and your dad are going to have to pick up the slack. Whoever leaves latest does the morning walk and then you pick up the evening. Mine get fed before I go to work and are in all day. Just have to analyze your schedule and make it work. You may not be able to do some fun student things that you want to but that's a small price to pay for a temporary situation and a dog you love. Maybe once a week send her to daycare or hire a dog walker to come and take her out just to curb any shortcomings between weekends when you should have more time on your hands. _________________ |

| Landon, no I think I read pretty well into your situation. Let's say for sake of an example that you had a little sister who was (heaven forbid) wheelchair bound ... and your mom had to have back surgery. Would you give your sister up for option? I can answer that,"No! you'd make it work, somehow."
In my viewpoint, you do have a little sister - except she has four paws rather than four wheels. Moms back surgery is going to incapacitate her for while, but in the scheme of things it'll be relatively short.
While i was living with her, my aunt had a rod put in her back and a couple of vertebrate fused in her neck. For a while it was miserable living with her because she hurt! But I stayed there because she'd helped me through a lot of stuff when I was a kid. She was housekeeping for an older gentleman (retired doctor) and I got called on to do some of the things she couldn't. At first we did have outside care but as she healed, she took on more of her responsibilities. So, to a degree, I do understand your quandary.
"You don't want to get rid of her." Well, don't!! Accept that it's going to put more pressure on you - but it's only temporary!
If you find that you really do need to rehome her, give us some help so we can help you. Pictures of her and some stories that relate what type of dog she is. Where are you?? I tried to suggest that if you were in London, UK *I* couldn't be a lot of help, but others might. So where are you??? _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |
