| Subject: Crate Training help!!! Sat Sep 22, 2018 5:40 pm | |
Hi everyone, yesterday I got my first 8 week siberian husky and the first thing I started with was crate training. I put in a crate mat and a toy to make it feel welcoming for him, we lured him in with treats and threw treats inside the crate so he could go in and get a feel of the crate. He would stay in a bit and then walk out, we made sure to keep the door open so he would know that he would be able to come and go when he wants. We kept using treats to reward him when he went inside, at one point he laid down with his toy and as soon as we closed the door he started crying and scratching on the door and we quickly opened it because we were worried it might cause him behavioral issues. We kept trying but same thing happened as soon as we closed the door, eventually he just fell asleep on the carpet and had an accident! I know crate training takes time, but I'm afraid to just leave him inside the crate when he starts crying and scratching the door, I feel like this will make him think of the crate as a negative area or worse create anxiety issues. I really want him to be crate trained so I can leave him home for and hour or two inside his crate without having any problems. What do i do?! Please help!

You are teaching him that crying gets him out. You need to become stoic and ignore the crying. Don't let him out until he's quiet. Start with small amounts time and build up. Try feeding his meals be there with the door closed.

Thank you! I was just afraid to do this because I thought it would make the dog think I was being abusive and worse I thought it would make him become aggressive as he gets older.

[ soapbox ] As a society, I think we've become so inclined to equate "correction" to "punishment" to "abuse" that we forget that most of us are "corrected" by someone every day. It may be a boss questioning how you got the results you did - because they're not right to a spouse wondering why they have to do the laundry when it's your turn. A correction for a dog normally is a positive - we reward the behaviour we want and tend to ignore the rest. Punishment - as has been commented on here so often - is almost useless unless you catch the pup 'in the act.' [ /soapbox ] @Jenng even little puppies are quick to learn when the proper correction is applied and if you catch the little wonder "dropping a load" on the floor, it doesn't take more than a time or two for him to realize that's not gonna get rewarded. They're really pretty adaptable - and if you're this concerned I don't think we need to even mention abuse. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford .
