Predicting Puppy's Color Pattern Empty
PostSubject: Predicting Puppy's Color Pattern   Predicting Puppy's Color Pattern EmptyWed May 23, 2018 7:31 am

Hi all,

This is Rocky, our new adorable puppy. He comes home with us next month and we were just curious to know if there are any indicators of how his color pattern will change. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Not sure if initial colors are much of an indication, but I'm not an expert. Here is a screenshot of our "Max" when we first saw him and a pic of him now, a few months later.  Oddly enough, he looks darker in photos than he does in real life.

Their coats tend to change every day until they are grown. Likely the darker goggles around his eyes will eventually lighten a tad. Will probably keep some of the darker color down his back but may lighten up too and the buff/brown tones may go away. Many will lighten slightly and the markings that are there might become more defined but the white will fill in more. It's really hard to say. Coat patterns have a mind of their own. Every day is different with them.

I personally think it's impossible to tell.  Your dog should be somewhere in the middle between what their parents were.

Here's Echo as a puppy...he was almost red/white in the face, all white body with a black racing stripe down his back...

At some point he started sprouting eyebrows...

Now he has an open face, is more grey/white with hints of a redish undercoat but he's lost his racing stripe

For me, the ONE thing you can know is...red nose? Some variant of white (as in Isabella white)/pale apricot, light to dark red. Black nose? Everything else, including pure white (white is a pattern, not a color.) So...really clarifies thing, huh? lol!
