| My sibe is 7 month now. He was doing well with training but recently started ignoring me. I realise they have a prey drive but he's killed 7 birds in the space of a week. The birds fly in my garden so I can exactly stop them. I tell him to leave on of my senior dogs alone he does when I'm there the minute I leave the room he's back rough playing. I'm putting him on a lead round the home to stop his bad behaviour. He's also started jumping up play biting. He seems to have changed is it his age? |

| Yes it is his age. Be firm with his boundaries, give plenty of exercise, and keep using the lead. If he isn't crate trained I would probably try and do so. The birds, not much you can do, sadly if you use leave it for instance and he still kills the bird that just reinforces the bad behavior, so timing is important, in that you don't want to have him associate leave it and him killing it at the same time. Somewhere around a year/year and a half he should start to mellow a little and be less of a pain hahaha. With the older dog how big is the dog and how old, sometimes they get a better message of leave alone from the older dog vs you, but it is dependent on size and age of the older dog. |

| Thanks, I put his training lead on and he's recently started mouthing he has not drawn blood yet any suggestions on stopping this behaviour. He's turned into a four legged demon at times. |

| Tisme, if he's not drawing blood then he's learned a pretty good degree of bite inhibition and just trying to get you to play. Young puppies just don't realize how thin our human skin can be and will draw blood unintentionally, the fact that yours doesn't is a good thing (yeh, right!) Several ways to undermine the desire to bite:
- Tire him out so he doesn't want to engage in 'boisterous' play (good luck on that one!)
- Swap a toy that he likes to play with - rather than your hand.
- Immediately, move your hands out of 'danger' and tell him 'No!'
- Step on the leash you have on him so he can't reach whatever it is he's trying to nip (unless that's your ankles, of course)
- Tell him "No!" and move away completely - essentially you're putting him a time out by not being available to play.
There are a plethora of ways that you can get it through to him, but mostly it's just a matter of time until he grows out of being a 'teen aged brat.' _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| To be honest he is a nightmare at the moment. How long does this phase last. |

| From my experience, adopting 1 yr old, totally untrained guy and son bringing home 4 month old mixed pup (and then leaving on field engineer assignment...Mom can you keep Archer for a while...) it is not until at least 18 months old these guy start to settle down. Toilet issues, sleep through the night kind of stuff, even crating, probably 10 months to a year. But the nibblies on the hands, the rambunctious behavior, well, that takes a while. Committed, consistent, daily (preferably 3x daily) training would probably shorten this quite a bit, but with me, life, bumbling along...it was a good 18 months.
Patience. We're with you! |

| I adopted a 7 month old (Finn) he chewed the shit out of me for about 3 months. Tired or not i was a chew toy, i think he left his litter way to early. He is just over 1.5 now and still play bites but is getting better with NO. i think it takes some time for the brain to catch up with these huskies, Finn is showing improvement each month. Will i ever get a husky under a year old again, NO. what i do with him is each time he bites into me i pinch his neck (like a litter mate would) and tell him no, if he keeps going i pinch harder and my voice gets louder, he is getting it quicker now. A tired husky works to, we play a ton of fetch and tug of war, along with daily walks
puppies suck, i get why they end up in rescue at this age to 2yr so much. if you put the work in they will get better, just not as fast as a lab would. _________________ |

| I'm with you on the puppy thing, Jenn. Despite Z'ev's foibles, he's really a much easier dog. Until Archer comes over...then I have to watch for fireworks |

| At 7 months our boy started turning into a wild maniac. 1-2 months after neutering he calmed back down and I could take him to the dog park again. Now at 13 months, he is calmer around the house, less needy for human attention, and less chewing and destruction. However I'm ready to give up on the dog park. He just wants to fight more and more...so dominant. Sucks losing that option for exercise and it was so fun for him. I need a dog park with just huskies that won't take his crap. |
