Possible joint pain? Empty
PostSubject: Possible joint pain?   Possible joint pain? EmptySat May 05, 2018 3:21 pm

Our 2 year old husky loves going on walks, but recently started slowing down a lot. After only about 20-25 minutes, he will walk real slow or just stop and sit. Often times he will jump up at us wanting us to carry him.. lol

He loves it when we rub/massage his legs and he chews on his feet alot. I'm wondering if he is having joint pain or something similar. He did hurt his back leg a while back at the dog park and was limping for half a day, but he started acting fine pretty quickly after that. Now he won't use that leg to stand on when peeing, he will only lift that back leg when he pees. Either he is just OCD about the way he pees or it hurts to put his weight on that back leg.

Any suggestions on what it could be, or joint/anti inflammatory supplements we could start him on? He is due for a yearly check up here in a couple weeks so we will bring it up then as well.

Well for hereditary issues they normally show up at 2 years of age, that is why people OFA hip test at 2 years of age, besides the obvious that the dog is normally fully grown at 2 years old. I would have your vet do an eval and since if I am reading right it's a back leg, prelim x rays may be in order. Has your pup been neutered? I use a joint treat called jump my husky mix girl is 5.5 years old no issues and my gsd who will be 3 in August also doesn't have any issues, but thought it a good idea on starting on a supplement. Miya, my husky mix is not into pill taking so the treats are awesome, she loves them, and when she isn't in the mood to eat, she will still eat these treats. It's a win! Smile https://inclover.com/shop/jump-15-oz-bag/ For some reason their jar is not listed, am going to contact the company to find out why. Their jar is 225 chews for around $65, I give 2 a day to each of my girls, they both weigh around 75 pounds.

Yes he is neutered! We thought he walked a little funny when he was a puppy, but the vet just said it was because he was young and not used to his legs yet. Lol

I will check those out and we will definitely talk to the doctor about x-rays!

I forgot to mention, the leg he does seem to not like standing on looks a bit different than his other back leg when walking, but its more like it doesn't bend as much at the knee as the other leg. We just noticed this the other day.

A good quality diet and some joint supplements like those mentioned above and/or fish oil supplementation goes a long way for dogs with hip dysplasia and arthritis. I have two with hip dysplasia. One walks pretty normal but does wear down pretty fast. The other walked like he had been hit by a car when I got him. LIke there was a hitch in his giddyup. Something else that can be a tell for possible hip issues is the way they lay. If he likes to lay with his back legs frogged out behind him that can be a sign of hip issues as well. Xrays will tell you a lot. Once you have those and know what you are working with then it becomes easier to make a game plan.

He chews on his feet a lot,  is it one in particular or pretty much all of them?

You mentioned he hurt his leg at the dog park previously, can you describe how that happened?

Like Jenn mentioned, once you have x-rays, you can formulate a game plan better, otherwise it's just a guessing game and I've found that doing that, can make you worry even more. Not good for you, or your pup. I hope you will keep us updated here. I wish I could be of more help to you! I've never had experience with HD (even though both Kohdi and Mishka like to lay a lot in the style Jenn mentions, they are 4 and 5 years old now and are pretty nimble on their feet !) but there have been a couple threads in here I remember reading on the subject, I just remember those sounding much more severe in symptoms than what I read in your post. With x-rays, it will all be very much clearer for you. My gut tells me that something may have happened to that leg at the dog park that day, half a day is a long time to limp for it to have been something minor, generally, a dog may hurt its leg, limp, but in an hour or less, is back to normal (I've had it happen a few times, lol) so half a day does seem long...to me. But hey! I'm guessing, that's not going to help you, lol, please keep us updated and good luck!

It's pretty equal for all his feet I'd say, his paws did used to be super rough because we took him on a lot of walks, but they're getting softer now.

Half a day may have been in exaggeration, he was limping for a bit at the dog park (we didn't see what happened) then he'd walk fine and run a bit and start limping again. We just left after that, he didn't necessarily limp consistently for that long, just seemed like it was sore and he didn't wanna mess with it. But after that day he didn't limp on it anymore for sure and he seemed fine.

Just recently he's started slowing down earlier on walks and we noticed the leg thing while he pees.

Should I also get an additional Vitamin E supplement to add to the In Clover Jump, since it has Fish Oil?

He eats 4 health grain free dog food, as well as quite a bit of veggies and fruits. He gets a lot of carrots and apple, some squash, zucchini, and banana.

LOL, You know I never thought about that. I assume it's formulated properly as to not having to use Vite E. I have not been adding. The company has been pretty responsive during the week, just may ask them, sure they will say it's fine.

I figured there must be enough Vitamin E from the other ingredients.. I wasn't sure if anyone knew or not!
