I've been getting comments on how great my dogs' teeth look so I thought it was high time to share my secret.  That secret is ProDen PlaqueOff



Prior to using this product I heavily relied on Petzlife Oral Care spray for years. The Petzlife was very effective however it contains a lot of ingredients, some of which are concerning to some pet parents, and none of my dogs liked the taste of Petzlife which often resulted in them fleeing as soon as I brought the Petzlife bottle out. Not to mention with Petzlife I had to time my usage of it so that the dogs didn't eat or drink for 30 minutes before and after application. This led to minor problems such as me picking up the water bowl and forgetting to put it back down after an hour, or forgetting to spray their teeth some days because I didn't think of it at the right time. Plus I'd have to wash my hands after wrestling to spray all the dogs in the mouths, a minor complaint but an extra step nonetheless.

Fast forward to earlier this year when I decided to give ProDen PlaqueOff a try. PlaqueOff is made with only ONE completely natural ingredient, seaweed. Specifically it is the seaweed ascophyllum nodosum. Basically, the product works by being ingested then being secreted in the saliva which allows it to work its magic (no, not really magic) on the dogs teeth. The label says to give the product 3-8 weeks for results to be seen. I noticed a minor difference in my sibes teeth starting around 4 weeks after starting the product but it was between 6-8 weeks that the results became really noticeable to people besides myself. And yes, people truly noticed and commented and wanted to know what I was doing for my dogs teeth.

PlaqueOff comes in a coarse "powder" form, similar to coarse black pepper, which you can simply mix into your dogs food. The bottle includes a really tiny scoop for measuring. According to the label, dogs under 25 lbs get 1/2-1 scoop; dogs 25-50 lbs get 1-2 scoops; and dogs over 50 lbs get 2-3 scoops daily.

My 5 lb Chihuahua gets 1/2 scoop and my 56 lb sibe gets 1 scoop daily.  Since you mix it in their food they don't even know it's there and there's no fighting to get them to take it. Mixing it in their food also means I don't have to worry about remembering to keep them away from food/water for 30 minutes before and after like with Petzlife. It's also easier for me to remember to give it to them everyday because it's become part of my daily food prep routine along with all the other supplements I add to their food. And no slobbery hands to wash after using this product unlike how slobber filled my hands got from fighting with and having to pull back my dogs cheeks to apply the Petzlife.

How does the effectiveness of PlaqueOff compare to that of Petzlife? I personally find them to be equally effective over time. I say "over time" because the Petzlife works faster since it is externally applied directly to the teeth. The PlaqueOff works slower because it works systemically having to be eaten, absorbed into the bloodstream via the gut, and then finally excreted in the saliva to have an effect.  But ultimately I find that the end result is the same.

So I have to say that, all things considered, I prefer the PlaqueOff due to it being easier to use and having fewer and safer/natural ingredients.  Price wise I'm not sure which is cheaper.  Neither is very expensive so I honestly don't care since the price difference can't possibly be very significant. I paid about $15 for a small 60 gm container of PlaqueOff and so far it's lasted a good 4 months (started using it in April 2013) using 1.5 scoops/day between my 2 dogs. I have a little over a quarter of the container left still, so I  expect my current container will last at least another month if not longer.  All in all that's not a bad value at all. And despite my using less than the recommended amount for my sibe, I'm still getting great results.

Hopefully I covered everything and that this information might help others.  I highly recommend PlaqueOff, even more than I do Petzlife.

Thanks for the info Val. I'll have to give it a try with Lucian. Brushing his teeth is a complete pain in the butt. I can't get everything clean cause he squirms, and licks, and bites the toothbrush. Hopefully my local pet store carries it. I'll pick some up when I get his food today.

You're welcome, I hope you guys like it as much as I do if you try it.  I really should have done a before and after picture but I was too embarrassed by the state I had let my sibes teeth get into from neglect to take a "before" picture of his teeth.  My sibe is 8 years old and has never had a dental and hopefully never will, he always gets great marks on his teeth at his annual vet visits too, including his last visit a month ago.

I've never shopped for it locally so I couldn't tell you who carries it, my 16 month old won't let me shop (little miss attitude) so I get almost everything online.

It says it's supposed to help with bad breath, but how well do you think it helps with that?

As far as bad breath, I can't say that my dogs have ever had an issue with bad breath so it's not a problem that has needed resolving for me personally. I can say, however, that as long as I've been using PlaqueOff that my dogs have not had any bad breath to speak of...but they never did before using it either so take that for what it's worth.

Now before Faith died she had horrible breath which is what really prompted me to try PlaqueOff in the first place. Unfortunately she died before we had enough time to see the effects of the product so I'll never know how it would have worked (or not) for her. FWIW, I did see lots of reviews on Amazon's site from people claiming that it helped their dogs' bad breath. Sorry, wish I was of more help on that one.

We've just started using PlaqueOff on our dogs- I had been noticing on a couple of my senior dogs the plaque was starting to build up and let me just say I am completely impressed with the results I'm seeing already!

A similar product is Seadent by Animal Essentials/Animals Apawthecary, though this one has not been tested on cats and dogs, just dogs. It's what I use on the little miss, since I like their other stuff. But she's so young and her teeth are good, so I've not been able to actually tell if the product makes a difference! Since it takes a while before you start to see a difference, I wonder if I could still brush Ginger's teeth with PetZLife gel for the first couple of weeks when we start ProDen....

I don't see why you couldn't use both initially.

Do you suggest using this even if you're feeding your dogs raw bones? I want to make sure I give them the best care possible, not sure if I'd be over-doing it by using this and feeding raw bones. They're not on a full-raw diet yet as with my freezer space its not possible, just chicken wings or fish every couple weeks.

If they don't appear to need it I don't see why you'd spend money on the product. However there's no harm in using both bones and PlaqueOff, I use both because I only feed partial raw.

Cloud and Yuki's teeth look fine but I notice Link's has a little bit of plaque along his teeth so I was thinking of PlaqueOff hehe

They make it for people too! lol. I just laughed at the last testimonial on their page: “It worked on my dogs and so I thought I’d try it on my husband – it seems to work for him too – he will be glad that you do a human version – where do I get it?”.  

I have tried this on mine two as well, however I don't seen any improvement has made from this. (two big pots already) Apparently, the petzlife you have suggested work far more better than this in our case.

I didn't notice much of a difference using it either. I fed it till I ran out (2 bottles) and it was well after you should have seen improvement.

I bought a bottle for my mom's 10 year old min pin who has horrible breath and it has made being around him tolerable. Before it he would open his mouth and it would induce vomiting. Now it isn't so bad.

I guess it's like most things, they don't necessarily work for everyone. I am still thrilled with the results I've gotten. My sibes teeth are still in great shape with no other special dental care besides the daily PlaqueOff.

I got my bottle and just started not to long ago, and I have definitely noticed a difference in Siku's breath. It is finally tolerable to be around. Even with brushing his teeth, it just was not pleasant so I'm glad this has helped. They haven't been on it long enough to know if it works beyond that yet, but so far so good!

Is there any reason why a puppy shouldn't be given plaqueoff?

if a puppy is eating good food there is no reason to use plaqueoff till maybe around 2-3yrs.

While oral hygiene is important to me, this product's claim to improve breath is what caught my eye.  

Mint flavored treats have not worked well.   In my opinion, he is already on good puppy food.


If safe for a growing puppy, this seemed like a good idea.... no?

Honestly I wouldn't wait until a problem develops to then start worrying about it. Contrary to Jenn's suggestion of waiting several years, I think oral care from puppyhood is important regardless of diet. We don't wait to start brushing and taking care of our teeth, dogs are no different. I used PlaqueOff for Prince when he was a puppy, I started him on it at 9 months old and his teeth are the picture of perfection as far as cleanliness and he's never had a single tooth brushed or cleaned, he's never had an rmb (or raw) and he's now 2.5 yrs old.

Val, I know this is super old. But Miya at 5 years old, and not getting bones like she once did, long story for another day. I bought this https://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/ProDen-PlaqueOff-Dental-Bites/232005.aspx Miya is very particular on what I give her, and she does do well if given treats for things, like I am giving a hip and joint supplement she loves, and is in treat form. So wondering if you think this will work as good as the powder that this review is about? She has some tartar build up on her back teeth, and hate taking pics anymore of her smiling because you can see it. I know I sound vain, ugh, but really it is not about that, it's about good cleaning of teeth. Her breath has always and still is perfect, And I still feed a partial raw diet, I just haven't found the right balance and access to proper bones to feed. Any opinions on their treats?
