UGH! Woe is me!
After reading all the threads about the problems with finding husky friendly housing I want to cry. I've extended my search and /so far/ no success. I am waiting to hear back from 3 or 4 different places about their policies (which boy I cannot express how silly I find it that they don't just post it on the website...why must I waste everyone's time, yours and mine, calling just to have a 4-second phone call or wait to hear back about the fact that it's a no?) but things are looking pretty slim. I won't be giving up though! Nothing is going to keep me and my bubs apart.
I know for a lot of places it's out of their control, in that insurance companies dictate what breeds are a-okay and which are not...
I'm wondering if there is a way to circumvent this maybe sometime in the future?
I'm hoping I don't sound foolish but wouldn't it be lovely if rather than breed restrictions apartment complexes had muzzle requirements for all breeds living on the premises in addition to the leash requirements while walking? Of course, one bad apple/owner would spoil it for the rest of the group but I can't help but dream.
Also, has there been any legislation or petitions that I could slap my name onto to help against husky breed restrictions?
and lastly, if anyone knows of good areas around Tampa near USF that are husky friendly I am super open to suggestions!!

When I lived in downtown, I was at Vintage Lofts and saw huskies there and I also know someone with a husky who lives at Havana Square. If you ever want to have a playdate just message me!

I don't know any federal regulations...yet. With the pitbull bans that have popped up people are starting to run the gauntlet on pushing open legislation. As for opting for muzzle requirements the same as leashes I think that would cause more issues than help as many dogs have adverse reactions to muzzles and they can turn a nice dog very insecure very fast which would cause setbacks in trying to get it across that huskies don't belong on the aggressive breeds list. I haven't seen anything where florida in general has a list that formally bans huskies though they do show up in their top 10 issue dogs list. You may have better luck looking for a private renter rather than going through a management company for a rental. People who own houses are more apt to interview your dog rather than just blanket deny you. You may also ask if you getting a renters insurance that covers your dog would help out. Most insurances don't ban dogs of certain breeds, they just require a writer for extra coverage to cover them. If you were willing to show that you have the writer maybe someone would listen to reason. Having dogs is why we bought a house. We don't have breed issues here, we just have issues with no one wanting you to have pets as a renter period. It is a real pain.

Thank you for for the suggestions Tiana, I will absolutely be checking both of those out!
Yeah as luck would have it I'm not headed to NY, although maybe I'll move back if they are more open to having huskies in rentals there. Most of my family is there so it is a possibility!
Jenn, thank you for the input. I will start looking more into private rentals instead of a big company and I will look into the writer for extra coverage that wasn't something I had seen mentioned anywhere else!
The whole muzzles thing was just a random thought, I didn't even think about how they can change a pup's comfort level/ make them insecure and is a very good point. I was just thinking of random "maybe this could help" type scenarios the chances of an insurance company okaying it is probably non-existent and like you mentioned wouldn't actually help show that they don't belong on the list. Maybe though, for other breeds, it could allow for more people to be exposed to them and maybe change some people's minds not to mention protect anyone who would or could be involved in any mishaps...idk just food for thought wave
I'm glad there isn't anything formally put into law about huskies but the fact that they show up on the top 10 issue dogs list is disheartening.

No breed bans in Indianapolis for insurance or housing. Occasionally someone will try to bring up a legal ban, but so far such bans have always been defeated. I work in downtown Indy and I see people walking Huskies, Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Rotties, etc., all the time. The Indianapolis/Marion County suburbs are no different, though the suburban counties outside of the area may have different laws.

I find apartment complexes pretty much impossible for huskies. We opt for home rentals where we can negotiate with the owners, I have given up entirely on apartments. We own our homes but each time we build a new house we end up renting a house during the construction phase which is why I have far more experience with rentals than I care for.

It is tough, I know! Crying or Very sad

In our area, most apartments do allow dogs (even big ones) but there is "pet rent" added to your monthly rent and it can be pretty steep. For example, I know the "pet rent" is an extra $200/month in the apartments around the corner from us! (My daughter's friend lives there, and has been wanting a dog, but her family literally can not afford it).

Also there are online organizations that help to find "Pet-Friendly" housing. I remember coming across those when I went to the websites of various rescues...maybe a bit of online searching will help to cut down on the phone work...

I hope you all find a great home!!

Thank you!!
Getting a writer for my pup, can I do that through any of the big insurance companies? I currently have GEICO/Assurants for renter’s.

If you're emailing GEICO, for example, you''ll have a better chance of success if you ask about a rider for your insurance policy.

You'll also have to consider if the coverage is strictly for damage to the house / apt or if it should cover his actions, such as a bite or a tear from a severe scratch (anything that might require medical intervention.)

One thing to note, GEICO tell me that they do not directly provide renters insurance - they pass that through to another agency so it would depend on who that company is what coverage might be included in your policy and what would have to be obtained via a rider. Taking a good look at your current policy would be my suggestion to start.

Oh gosh, I feel so silly/clueless Shocked
Thank you, everyone! I will be sure to use the correct word when inquiring and find out if it would also cover medical intervention. I was actually mid-fixing my post when you left yours! They do pass renters to another company (Assurants) and I'm now waiting to hear back from them about it.

Another thing you could do that may or may not work in your state is get your pup registered as an emotional support dog. That is what I'm going to do when I get my baby girl in the fall, but I actually plan on using her for emotional support so it won't be a lie. Here in NC, housing places are required to allow any breed of service dog to stay there with their owner and their owner does not have to pay a pet fee since the dog is vital to the person's well being. I work with "real" service dogs so I am in NO WAY trying to tell you to cheat the system, but if getting rid of him solely for housing would damage your mental & emotional health, then an ESD might be a good idea! Check the emotional support dog rules in your state though.
