I’m a big supporter of “never let a husky off a lead” in fact I don’t like the idea for any dog. My horse is trained to walk and work 100% at liberty. We could jog for hours no leads and she recalls / jobs beside me. However, being an animal with fight or flight instincts I don’t ever want to put her in a scenario that could endanger her. So on a lead she stays. I have the same thought process with the dogs. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
Anyways! The family has a cabin. By a lake. Surrounded by bush. 10:00 last night when I took him for a walk her met his first rabbit... snapped the lead clip and off he went into the scrub bounding over the bushes in the torch light like a drunk gazel.
He had the time.of.his.life!
As the surrounding roads are pretty vacant until morning I was mainly woried about snakes and the thousands of Kangaroos. Fun fact. Kangaroos are perfectly capable of drowning dogs...
Didn’t bother calling him, he had found a new love :p. Just stalled at a pathetic human pace in his general direction. One thing that surprised me was how quiet he was! Pitch black, thick scrub and he was dead silent.
Thankfully after 5-10 minutes he came bolting back to make sure we were alive. And home we went. I will forever be thankful for the “games” we play in vacant blocks. Teaching him to “check in” play chase and the good all “catch and release”. To him even with all the new exciting smells. Rabbits to chase and play with. It was just another game.
Despite his marathon run he put in a good show of being hyper active for the rest of the night. Just in case I thought a good run would tire him out.
Still, not something I would enjoy happening again. He will be double clipped from now on!!
